++ Charlie Caton (Shrewsbury Town) born 2003, Midfielder.
As was reported in an article that Neil included in one of his recent daily updates, a decision regarding Charlie’s future in football is soon to be made by the Shrewsbury management team as they formulate plans for the composition of next season’s squad at the club. Charlie has undoubtedly had a productive season and though mainly playing for the U-18 team, he has also been involved with the first team, making his debut at that level when introduced off the bench in a couple of EFL Trophy matches. Starting with a couple of occasions just before the early termination of last season, he has been on the bench for league games as well, with another half dozen occurrences in this one. Charlie, along with other promising second year scholars will need to be offered a full professional contract if they are to remain at the club. We shall have to wait and see what develops.

Tyler Evans (Swansea City) born 2004, Goalkeeper.

In his first year as a scholar with Swansea, Tyler has been sharing goalkeeping duty for the U-18 team, making appearances in around half of the games they have played this season. He did get exposure to the demands of that level last season by playing in a little more than a handful of games for them. He will likely establish himself as the primary candidate to be the keeper for the team next season. It is also a possibility that he will get some assignments to play for the U-23 team, having already had a few games on the bench for them this season. As a schoolboy in the Swansea academy programme, he regularly represented Wales and was a member of last season’s successful Victory Shield squad. He continued his association with Wales teams when attending the training camp arranged for the U-17 squad in March.

Will Jenkins-Davies (Plymouth Argyle) born 2004, Midfielder.
Will was called up to join the recent U-17 squad training camp group, continuing his association with Wales teams, as he was also a member of the co-champion Wales squad that competed in last season’s Victory Shield tournament. Now he is a first year scholar and has been playing regularly for their U-18 team. Will is an attacking midfielder and supplements his creative skills by regularly scoring goals and has already scored seven times for the U-18’s this season. He also scored for the Wales schoolboy team last season.

Callum Ryan-Phillips (Newport County) born 2004, Defender.
It has certainly been an eventful first few months for Callum as he has started his time as a scholar with Newport this season. Judging from the line-ups I have seen for the FA Youth Cup matches, he has seemingly secured a regular starting place in the U-18 team, an assumption that is easy to make when considering his other achievements. Newport decided to give a number of young players an opportunity to gain some valuable experience by exposing them to first team football in their EFL Trophy ties. Callum was given a starting assignment in two of those games, playing the whole of both of them. It gives an indication of the confidence the management team have in his ability. He is primarily a central defender but can also play in a midfield role if required.

Aidan MacNamara (Cardiff City) born 2003, Defender.
Last season, as a schoolboy associate, Aidan had a half dozen starts and a couple of introductions off the bench for the U-18’s as a good preparation base for his move into the ranks of the scholars this season. This season, he has played in around half the games for the team, as coaches try to accommodate opportunities for a large and competitive squad eligible for selection. In his time as a schoolboy, Aidan was involved with the Wales international team from an early age, but did miss out when he had to withdraw his availability when named in an U-16 squad. Last season he was called up for the U-17 squad that competed in the European qualifiers.

Connor Salisbury (Crewe Alexandra) born 2003, Forward.
Connor started his time as a scholar with Crewe this season and has not only been playing for their U-18 team but also for the U-23’s. It gives an indication that the coaching staff at the club believe he has the ability to progress at an accelerated rate and are exposing him to the challenges of a higher level of development football to enhance it. He was selected for the Wales U-18 squad that attended a recent training camp and played a friendly match. It continued his association with Wales teams from his time as a schoolboy. He took part in the Cymru Cup series of matches in the summer of 2017 and then was a member of an U-16 squad that played in matches in the spring of 2019 as preparation for the transition to U-17 level last season.

Luca Smith (Bristol City) born 2003, Goalkeeper.
Luca played a big part for the Bristol City U-18 team in their recent fourth round FA Youth cup match. With the teams level after extra time, a penalty shoot-out was needed to determine the winner and Luca made a couple of saves in the sequence that ensured his team was victorious. He played in some games for the U-18 team last season and has continued to do so this season, his first year as a scholar with the club. Luca represented Wales when he was a member of the schoolboy squad for the 2018/19 Victory Shield competition

++ to be confirmed if eligible for Wales
