Joel Colwill (Cardiff City) born 2004, Midfielder.

A first year scholar with Cardiff this season, Joel has completed a ten year association with the club, having started out in the academy programme as a six year old. He has established a regular place in the U-18 team, playing in three quarters of their games and has also managed to contribute with four goals scored. He will want to continue developing his game with the team and create a belief in the coaches that he can be competitive in a higher level of development football. As a schoolboy, Joel was involved with Wales teams. He played in the 2018 Cymru Cup games, also for the Wales U-16 team in 2019.

Callum Ryan Phillips (Newport County) born 2004, Defender.
Starting out as a scholar with Newport at the beginning of last season, Callum was not only playing for the club’s U-18 team but was doing well enough to earn two starting assignments for the first team selected for Papa John’s Trophy matches. He has again been playing for the U-18 team this season but has not played in any first team games, his only involvement being on the bench for one Papa John’s Trophy game. He will want to build on the experience gained and show the coaching staff that he has the ability to be considered for first team duty in the future. If he is successful, he may possibly be offered the opportunity to remain at the club beyond his time as a scholar which will be completed this season.

Morgan Williams (AFC Wimbledon) born 2004, Midfielder.
Although it is his first season as a scholar with Wimbledon, Morgan was already familiar with the demands of playing U-18 football for the club having done so on numerous occasions as a schoolboy member of their academy. During that time, he also represented other Wimbledon development teams and was a member of the team that played in last season’s London Senior Cup final, scoring their goal as a youthful team went down to a narrow defeat. He has obviously impressed the coaching staff during his years at the club and will want to continue doing so as he develops his game and try and get himself considered for first team football as soon as possible. Morgan had a busy time representing Wales teams as a schoolboy and was a member of the 2019/20 Victory Shield squad that ended up as co-champions in that season’s tournament. Last season, he attended the training camps organized in the autumn and spring for the U-17 squad. Cancellation of the European tournaments meant that no matches were played. This season he has attended a couple of training camps arranged for the U-18 squad and had a starting assignment for the team that played a friendly match against England in September.

As Wales fans, we always support the team, though all will agree being accustomed to doing so in more pleasing circumstances over recent seasons. Unavoidably, the success of the team elevates our expectations as we look ahead. For that possibility to exist, the present competitiveness of the team must be at least maintained and hopefully improved upon. As I assess the first half of this season, I believe that we can anticipate the future in optimistic terms. Over those months there have been notable achievements attained by many of the Welsh young guns, sufficiently significant in my opinion to warrant a positive outlook. A dozen and a half have made their first team debuts in that period, all gaining praise for their contributions when doing so. In quite a few cases, performances were good enough to develop into repeated selection and an opportunity to establish themselves as regular first team members. Added to this is a high number that are progressing at above average rate in development football, some doing so in a manner that they are regarded as close to being given a first team chance. The number of debutants is a figure that I would consider above average for a whole season and therefore excellent in a half season span, with a reasonable prospect of it increasing before season’s end. Admittedly, just speculative comments until the passage of time provides proof about its validity. However, the quantity and quality of these young guns produces a belief in a strong prospect of my forecast being correct. For now, we fans will be much more focused on the fortunes of the present senior squad. We are hoping that an already determined busy 2022, will have added competitive matches scheduled to be played in the final two months of the year. That possibility will be decided in March when the team competes in the play-off matches. The group is quite evenly matched and I’m sure the fans of the other three nations will be as equally confident as we are about which team will prevail, and get one of the final World Cup places. We have just a few more weeks to wait until everything will be decided and hopefully at its conclusion members of the Red Wall will have reason to celebrate. Of course, it could entail them having to plan further trips on what is already a potentially busy schedule.
