League One

Coventry 1-0 Gillingham

Aaron Morris returned to Gillingham’s starting line-up after appearing in just of their last five matches. Josh Pritchard was back on the bench, but appeared on 75 minutes. It probably wasn’t their fault Gillingham lost again.

Aaron Phillips did well when he replaced an unwell team-mate last weekend, but the 20 year old was back on Coventry’s bench as they extended their unbeaten run to five matches.

Bristol City 2-0 Scunthorpe

Dave Richards was on the bench for Bristol City as they moved up to second with victory over struggling Scunthorpe.

Bristol City are unbeaten this season, but they were without the services of Wes Burns (not that they’ve been making much use of his services), who is on international duty.

Oldham 1-0 Fleetwood

James Wilson received an offer from league leaders Peterborough United during the transfer window, but rejected it in favour of staying with Oldham. He had no immediate cause to regret it as Oldham won their third consecutive match and kept their third consecutive clean sheet.

This result ended Fleetwood’s unbeaten start to the season – while goalkeeper Chris Maxwell continues to be in excellent form and made some good saves, an Oldham penalty just about got the better of him.

Peterborough 3-1 Port Vale

Richard Duffy was on the bench for the first time this season in the league, but his absence didn’t help Port Vale, as Peterborough won for the fifth time in their six league games this season.

Port Vale have just one win in the league this season.

Walsall 0-0 Colchester

Tom Bradshaw came close for Walsall when a looping header clipped the bar, but the match finished goalless, leaving Walsall without a win in twelve league games (six this season).

Sanchez Watt made his first start for Colchester since recovering from tendonitis, and could have won a penalty, but nothing was given. On the positive side, Colchester’s point ends a run of four defeats.

League Two

Luton 0-1 Plymouth

Swansea loanee Alex Bray made his Plymouth – and Football League – debut as a substitute, but he left the field after just eleven minutes with ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Bray could be facing six months on the sidelines.

Alex Lawless made his first Premier League appearance for Luton after recovering from a hamstring injury. Jake Howells forced at least one good save from the Plymouth keeper, but couldn’t force the ball into the goal.

Not a great day for Luton – but my sympathies are with Bray.

Accrington 3-2 Tranmere

Eliot Richards got the assist for Tranmere’s second goal according to some reports, but others say it was some other guy. In the end, it didn’t matter very much, as Accrington fought back from 2-1 down to earn their first win of the season.

Jason Koumas returned from a knee injury as a substitute. Owain Fôn Williams did not feature for Tranmere as he was busy preparing to watch Wales beat Andorra.

Carlisle 4-4 Wimbledon

Dan Hanford watched helplessly from Carlisle’s bench as Wimbledon scored in stoppage time to deny Carlisle a first win of the season. Carlisle sit just above the relegation zone with three points, while 13th-placed Wimbledon become joint-top scorers with 11 goals.

Dag & Red 0-2 Northampton

Kaid Mohamed’s pace proved difficult for Dag & Red to handle, and he got the assist for Northampton’s opening goal as they moved into the top six. Northampton have now played five matches at Dagenham’s home ground. This was their fifth win and fifth clean sheet. The chant “Can we play you every week?” comes to mind.

Exeter 1-2 Mansfield

Christian Ribeiro made his Exeter debut after recovering from injury, starting the match and completing 64 minutes.

It could have been a goalscoring debut, but not only did he fail to spot the open goal, he decided to tee up a player who wasn’t there. I have a spare Specsavers voucher if you’re interested, Christian.

Lee Beevers played 90 minutes for winners Mansfield. Arron Davies was an unused substitute for Exeter.

Morecambe 0-0 Cheltenham

Troy Brown helped Cheltenham to keep their fifth clean sheet from eight matches in all competitions, also maintaining their unbeaten run, which has seen them climb to second in the table. Brown’s back three found themselves under pressure in the second half, but rose to the challenge, denying Morecambe what would have been a fifth win from six.

Stevenage 2-3 York

Danny Parslow was an unused substitute for York, who sealed only their first win of the season – but that’s not as bad as it sounds - they haven’t actually lost yet. Stevenage were 2-0 down and a man light after half an hour, but they brought the score back to 2-2. York’s winning penalty was probably not cheered by those who do the pools.

Wycombe 0-0 Bury

Craig Jones started for Bury despite reports that he was still struggling with a back injury, but it obviously wasn’t bad enough to prevent the right back from doing his defensive duties. Substitute Nicky Adams went close with a header for Bury, who are unbeaten in five.

Joe Jacobson proved a threat from corners for Wycombe, as well as being solid in defence, but ‘work in progress’ Aaron Holloway was again an unused substitute.

Newport 1-1 Cambridge

Darren Jones and Andrew Hughes kept their places in Newport’s starting line-up. Cambridge dominated the match, but Newport scored in the last minute to sneak a share of the pints. Mike Flynn was an unused substitute. Newport are unbeaten in three, but have only won once this season.
