Wales football news - June 2003.

No approach has been made .
Mark Hughes has played down rumours linking him with the assistant coach job at Manchester United.

Former assistant Carlos Queiroz claimed before leaving Old Trafford that Manchester United was eager to lure Hughes back to his former club. Mark Hughes said he was surprised at the news and that he certainly hasn't spoken to anyone at the club.

He said he was flattered by the rumours but that his previous connections to a club where he was very happy made it inevitable that assumptions will be made.

However he refused to be drawn on whether he would accept an offer from Manchester United. "I have never even contemplated the possibility of working with a club and managing Wales on a part-time basis." he said.

We can win the group .
Mark Hughes has set his sights on Wales winning Euro 2004 qualifying Group 9, and guaranteeing a place in next summer’s finals in Portugal.

If his side plays as well as they can, Sparky expects a win against Serbia & Montenegro on August 20th. A positive result that night will guarantee a play off place.

With four games left, any points picked up away from home will put Wales in an even stronger position, with the manager stressing it’s entirely in our own hands.

“A play-off place would be wonderful but I think we need to go on with the view that we are going to try to win the group." said Mark Hughes.

Hughes on a mission.
With Wales’ next qualifier in August against Serbia & Montenegro, manager Mark Hughes will see his sides next opponents twice this week.

Hughes and assistant coach Eric Harrison will be visiting Leicester tomorrow night as Serbia take on England in a friendly. The pair will then fly off to Helsinki to see their Group 9 rivals take on Finland on Saturday.

Any positive results in our favour during the next three qualifying group games will see us go along towards Portugal, come the evening of Wednesday 11th June one thing is for sure we will still be on top of Group 9.

"If they fail to win even one of their qualifiers it will obviously help us." said Hughes.
