FAW: Glyn Williams 1918-2011

FAW

Glyn Williams :1918-2011
It is with great sadness that the FAW marks the passing of former international player, Glyn Williams. He was 92.

Full-back Glyn, won one cap for Wales in the 1951 Festival of Britain International with Switzerland at the Racecourse, Wrexham. In so doing, he became the fifth oldest player to win a first cap for Wales as he was 32 years 194 days old on his debut. Wales won the match 3-2.

Maesteg - born Glyn was a Cardiff City regular after the war, playing some 144 league matches. Born in November 1918, he had earlier played for Caerau, helping them win the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1946. One of a legion of players who lost the best years of their careers to the Second World War. His cap came-about as regular right back, Walley Barnes, was needed by Arsenal for a tour of Brazil, so Glyn made his debut in the same match as the young John Charles. The Wales goals came from Trevor Ford (2) and Ron Burgess.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
