Mark Hughes made six changes to the team that started against Finland. Roger Freestone replaced Mark Crossley, the keeper winning his first cap. Gareth Roberts won his first full cap at left back ahead of Darren Barnard. In came Mark Delaney, Matthew Jones, Iwan Roberts and Dean Saunders for the injured Chris Coleman, Mark Pembridge, Nathan Blake and Ryan Giggs.

A capacity crowd of 72,500 filled the Millennium Stadium as Wales started well and battled for an hour, but three goals in 10 second half minutes earned the talented Brazilians a 3-0 victory.
