Italy opened the scoring on 8 minutes through Inter Milan striker Nicholas Ventola. Wales equalised on 28 minutes through QPR's Leon Jeanne but was then sent off for taking off his shirt in celebration. Jeanne had already been booked in the 14th minute.
Ten-man Wales then held on until the 62nd minute when Christiano Zanetti was fouled by a Danny Williams, allowing Andre Pirlo to score from the penalty spot. Wales then hit back for a second time when Matthew Jones equalised on 68 minutes. Ventola scored his second which was followed three minutes later with a goal by Camandini. Bannucchi added the fifth before Ventola completed his hat trick just before the end.
