Welsh Football Young Guns update news - by Owain Jones.

Young guns news - Sunday 29-Oct- 06

Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) Scored a superb free kick at the weekend to prove that he is quickly becoming the dead ball expert in the Charlton U18 team.  The Wales U19 international curled an excellent free kick in from 30 yards to ripple the net.  Although the young Addicks failed to get even a point as the crashed 4-2 at home to the Hammers.

Mark Bradley (Walsall - midfielder) Gave his side a lead that they would not let slip in the reserve team encounter against Shrewsbury at the start of the week. The U19 international burst through a couple of challenges before unleashing a shot from the edge of the area that went in past ex schools stopper Chris Sanna.  Although if you read the Shrewsbury website, the strike wasn't quite as crisp as the one described on the Saddlers match report.  The game finished 2-1 to Walsall with the Shrewsbury goal coming from Dale Williams (Shrewsbury - striker) who headed home his teams only goal.

Kyle Critchell (Southampton - defender) Has joined Torquay on loan for two months and will be eligible to feature in their match against Shrewsbury tomorrow.  Before suffering a cruciate injury during the 2005/06 the 19 year old defender had pushed his way on to the fringes of the first team under manager Harry Redknapp but has not featured for the seniors whilst George Burley has been in charge.

Rob Davies (WBA - midfielder) Struck with a 40 yard shot as the WBA reserves beat Rotherham in the Senior League Cup on Wednesday night.

Jamal Easter (Cardiff - striker) Scored in midweek as the reserves drew 2-2 with Coventry.  The younger brother of Jermaine Easter (Wycombe - striker)  went one on one with the keeper before finishing calmly to equalise for the Bluebirds.

Michael Chedwyn Evans (Man City - striker) Kept up his exciting start to the season with another goal for the U18 team as they smashed Liverpool 4-0.  The Wales U19 international crept in to score in the 76th minute to rub salt into the wound.

Peter Ferris (Carlisle - striker) Has gone on loan to Workington fc for a month as he looks to get some game time under his belt.  The former Wales U19 international suffered a serious knee injury last season before accepting a one year deal to stay as a professional.

Christopher Flynn (Crewe - midfielder) Was an unused sub at the weekend as the Crewe first team lost 2-1 to Blackpool.  The Wales U19 international has been involved with the seniors on a few occasions this season and may well be considered for the Wales U21 team for the friendly v Germany.

David Jones (Man Utd - midfielder) Capitalised on the Sir Alex's use of the Carling Cup to blood youngsters with a starting spot for the seniors in the tie against Crewe on Wednesday night.  The Wales qualified midfielder has found midfield spots rather hard to come by this season due to the impressive start made by the Red Devils, but a victory at Gresty Road should give the talented schemer another chance to shine in the next round.

Chris Jones (Swansea - striker) Made his league debut last Saturday, stepping off the bench to replace Lee Trundle with a few minutes remaining in the game.  The Bonymaen born youngster turned down overtures from Blackburn and Man City to stay with the club he has supported all his life.  Jones was also a talented rugby player, but side stepped the chance to chase the egg to play for Swansea youth team.

Andy King (Leicester - striker) Played his part as the Foxes edged a thriller against Coventry in the U18 league last weekend.  The Wales U19 international thought he had won it with his sides fourth goal, but the Sky Blues equalised only to squander the lead in the 5-4 victory.

Kayne McLaggon (Southampton - striker) Made the step up to U18 level in midweek as the Saints U18's crashed 2-1 to Spurs.  The U17 international has started the season in good fashion and it has obviously not gone unnoticed by Academy Geroges Prost.

Michael Nardiello (WBA - striker) Scored the winner as the Baggies sunk Blackburn in the U18 league encounter last Saturday.  The Welsh qualified striker struck late on to secure all three points against the high flying Rovers.  It was double celebration for the young Nardiello as he also struck in his sides 3-1 Senior League Cup win over Rotherham in midweek.

Liam Norval (Cambridge - defender) Has been told that he will not be kept on by U's manager Jimmy Quinn.  The former West Ham and Leicester trainee will now start the painful look for another club as he looks to kick start his career.

Lewis Powell (Bristol Rovers - striker) Was on target for Mangotsfield United after completing a loan move last weekend.  The striker grabbed the fourth of the five goals as his new club trounced Stourport Swifts in the second qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup.
"Lewis has progressed well this season, and will benefit from the chance of playing competitive first team football at a decent level with Mangotsfield." Paul Trollope, Bristol Rovers manager.

Owain Warlow (Lincoln - midfielder) Netted a late winner as the Red Imps sunk Barnsley in the reserve team encounter this week.  The ex Rhydfelen pupil raced on to a through ball before calmly slotting home the winner past the oncoming keeper to give his side a 2-1 victory.

Young guns news - Tuesday 24-Oct- 06

Kyle Cricthell (Southampton - defender) + Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Both operated in the bach four in midweek for the Saints reserves in the coast clash against Bournemouth.  It was the the Welsh boys that came out on top with Southampton running out 4-0 winners.

Rob Davies (WBA - midfielder) Stepped off the subs bench to notch a brace in front of new manager Tony Mowbray on Wednesday night.  The Wales U21 international slide in to score his first and got his second with a volley into the top right hand corner of the net.

Josh Klein-Davis (Bristol City - striker) Was yet again on the score sheet but to no avail as the U18 team crashed to a first defeat in four matches against Reading last weekend.   The Wales U19 international stole in to score a goal which levelled it for his side on half time.  Unfortunately the goal was not enough as the Royals snuck a later winner.

Neal Eardley (Oldham - defender) Will be missing for the next six weeks due to a medial knee ligament injury.  The Wales U21 international who has been hugely impressive this season will now hope that he will regain the same form on his return to push his first team claims once more.

Michael Chedwyn-Evans (Man City- striker) Bagged himself a goal last weekend as the City U18's lost the mini derby 4-2 to Utd. The Wales U19 striker picked up the Academy player of the month for August and September.  He also got 90 minutes under his belt as the reserves beat an experienced Sheffield Utd side 2-1.

Russell Fry (Hull - midfielder) Scored from the spot as the Tigers reserves beat Doncaster 2-1 on Wednesday night.  After returning to the KC Stadium from a loan spell at Halifax, the former Wales U16 international has found senior duty difficult to come buy and may once again have to look at a spell away to get more competitive game time.

Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) Was once again on the score sheet for the U18 team last Saturday.  Although it wasn't enough as they Addicks crashed 3-2 to Millwall, with Basey converting his goal from the penalty spot.  He also played the full 90 minutes as the Addicks reserves drew 0-0 with Fulham on Tuesday night.  The Fulham starting XI contained Matthew Collins (Fulham - midfielder) who also got 90 minutes under his belt.

Rostyn Griffiths (Blackburn - midfielder) Scored with a rocket of a shot as the Rovers reserves beat Everton 1-0 on Monday night.  The Welsh qualified youngster latched on to a ball in midfield before lashing it in to the top corner from 35 yards.

Lewis Guy (Doncaster - striker) Made it two goals in two games as Doncaster beat Huddersfield 2-1 in midweek and Cheltenham 2-0 last Saturday.  The Welsh qualified striker struck his sides winner on Tuesday night with a crisp low drive to secure all three points.

Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers - striker) Scored the winning goal for Rovers last Saturday in the 2-1 win against Notts County.  On as a sub, the Wales U21 international cut in on his right foot and drilled the ball home to give his side three points.

David Hutton (Spurs - striker) Is a name the creeps up quite often on this Young Guns news page.  The Republic of Ireland youth international was on the score sheet as the Spurs U18 team drew 3-3 with Villa.  The striker has a Welsh link with a grandmother from Ogmore.

Chris Jones (Swansea - midfielder) Has signed a pro contract with the Swans after nearly leaving the club for Manchester City during the summer. "It's a dream move for me because I've been a Swans fan all my life, but I never thought things would happen so quickly for me.  (Manchester) City tried to sign me last season. If I'm honest, I was tempted and came really close to leaving - they are Premiership clubs after all." Chris Jones

David Jones (Man Utd - midfielder) Was an unused sub on Saturday as the Red Devils came from behind to beat Wigan 3-1 last Saturday.  The dual qualified midfielder has been the centre of much media speculation in the past few weeks, with a host of Championship clubs vying for his signature.

Kayne McLaggon (Southampton - striker) Kept up his good start to the season with a brace as the U16's beat Ipswich 4-2 last Saturday.  The Wales U17 international got a goal in each half as the Saints cruised to victory.

Liam Norval (Cambridge - defender) Has joined Cambridge Utd after being released by Leicester City in the summer  The former West Ham academy played for a Cambridge XI in a 2-0 win against Braintree this week and was an unused substitute in the 2-1 loss to Crawley at the weekend.

Jamie Price (Birmingham - midfielder) Started for the reserves on Thursday night for the first time this season.  The combative midfielder played the 90 minutes as the Blues drew 1-1 with Bradford.  The Bantams starting XI contained Wales U17 international Damian Hopkins (Bradford - defender).

Young guns news - Sunday 15-Oct- 06

Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) Led from the front as U18 skipper at the weekend, his crisp passing and also a first half strike set the young Addicks on the way to a 3-0 win over Norwich.  The Wales U19 international has become something of a dead ball expert and he delivered once again with a free kick that arced around the wall and into the bottom left hand corner.

Josh Klein-Davis (Bristol City - striker) Bagged his seventh goal in five games to help the U18 side to an away win at Watford. This should make up for only being on the standby list for the Wales under 19 squad for the forth coming games in Luxemborg at the end of the month.  He will have done himself no harm either with a goal from 10 yards as the Robins beat Cardiff reserves 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.  He was joined in the starting XI by Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City - defender) and James Wilson (Bristol City - defender) with Dean Grubb (Bristol City - midfielder) appearing from the bench.

Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Was in amongst the action as the Southampton reserves beat Millwall 3-2 on Tuesday.  The Wales U19 international created all manner of havoc with his set pieces as the Lions crumbled against the Saints.

Chris Jones (Swansea - midfielder) Struck in the reserve team game against Bristol Rovers this week.  The midfielder who was just been called up to the Wales U19 squad hit the back of the net from 12 yards as the Swans drew the encounter 2-2.

David Jones (Man Utd - midfielder) Is reported to be in a four way tug of war between Championship clubs.  The Wales qualified midfielder started a few pre-season games for the Red Devils, but has not been a regular in the match day squads at the start of this season.  The 22 year old is now at a stage in his life where he should now be getting regular first team football, and maybe a step down to the Championship would give him the development he needs in his career at this present stage.

Andy King (Leicester - midfielder) Got on the score sheet on Saturday as the Leicester U18 team beat Villa 4-1. King who was recently called up to the Wales U19 squad for the qualifiers notched his sides second goal.

Daniel Knight (Oldham - defender) Started for the Oldham U18 team as they put Shrewsbury to the sword this week.  The Conwy born defender played the full 90 minutes as the Latics thrashed Shrewsbury 5-1.  Knight is also on the standby list for the Wales U19 squad that travel to Luxembourg at the end of the month.

Daniel Nardiello (Barnsley - striker) Built up some match fitness this week as the Barnsley reserves dished up a goal fest against local rivals Leeds in midweek.  The son of former Wales international Donato got 90 minutes under his belt and finished with a goal and an assist in the 6-4 win.  It remains to be seen whether Wales manager John Toshack will take a look at the striker during the friendly international against Liechtenstein in November.

James Wilson (Bristol City - defender) Signed a three year pro contract in his first year as a YTS during the summer and has been given squad number 28.  The talented defender will also represent his country at the end of the month after being selected for the Wales U19 squad.

Karl Yelland (QRR - defender) captained the under 18s to a 2-1 win over Portsmouth last Saturday but missed Saturday's defeat against Wycombe due to injury. Hopefully it will only be a week or so before he is back playing again

Young guns news - Sunday 08-Oct- 06

Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) + Chris Saunders (Charlton - defender) Have been in the wars of late, with both players suffering from various injuries that have kept them out of action.  Basey has been hampered by back spasms which kept him out of last weeks youth game and Saunders is still a couple of weeks away from action due to a knee injury.

Mark Bradley (Walsall - midfielder) Celebrated his call up to the Wales U19 squad with a goal for the reserves in a 4-0 win over Barnsley on Tuesday night.  The young defender firmly headed in his sides second goal as they coasted to victory.

Josh Klein-Davis (Bristol City - striker) Netted a brace as he inspired the U18 side to victory over Coventry last Saturday.  The Wales U17 international scored his sides first and third goal as he took his goal tally for the season to six goals.  He wasn't the only Welsh youth international on duty with Dean Gruff (Bristol City - midfielder) Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City - defender) and James Wilson (Bristol City - defender) all heavily involved.

Kayne McLaggon (Southampton - striker) Notched his sides first from the spot as the Southamtpon U16 side ran out 2-0 winners against Fulham at the weekend.  The Wales U17 international was brought down and dusted himself off to score his sides first goal.

Matthew Wells (Spurs - midfielder) Got 90 minutes under his belt as he continued his comeback after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury.  The Wales qualified midfielder played the duration as the Spurs U18 team drew with Reading.  A point was rescued for his side by David Hutton (Spurs - striker) who qualifies for Wales through a grandmother from Ogmore.  Hutton also played for the reserves against Reading on Wednesday night.

Young guns news - Sunday 01-Oct- 06

Gareth Bale (Southampton - defender) + Kyle Critchell (Southampton - defender) + Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) All played as the Saints reserves beat QPR 3-0 this week.  The young Saints produced a technically superior performance to bury the Rangers, with James putting the game beyond doubt with a 30 yard strike.

Kyle Bassett (Cardiff - midfielder) + Jamal Easter (Cardiff - striker) Got on the score sheet as the City reserves beat Plymouth 3-1 at Home Park on Tuesday afternoon.  It was the Newport born Bassett who struck first, blistering away from the Pilgrims defence before slipping the ball underneath the advancing goalkeeper to make it 1-0 at half time.  The lead was doubled after the interval with U19 international Easter turning in the box and firing past the keeper to make it two nil and set up a platform for victory.

Matthew Collins (Fulham - midfielder) Played the full 90 minutes as he works up his fitness levels after last seasons injury wrecked campaign.  The game finished 1-0 to Watford, but with another full game under his belt and an appearance on the bench for the seniors in the Carling Cup competition will have boosted his confidence.

Rob Davies (WBA - midfielder) Played another game for the reserves this week after a lengthy lay off with an ankle injury had disrupted his pre-season plans.  The Baggies reserves won the game 2-0 with Michael Nardiello (WBA - striker) once again impressing in the front line.

Josh Klein-Davis (Bristol City - striker) Bagged himself a brace as the Bristol City U18 team put West Ham to the sword last Saturday.  The U19 international notched a brace in five minutes as they ran out 5-0 winners.  He was joined in the starting XI by Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City - defender) + James Wilson (Bristol City - defender) and the Wales U19 Dean Grubb (Bristol City - midfielder) who is slowly finding his feet after suffering a serious knee injury last season.

David Edwards (Shrewsbury - midfielder) Has been strongly tipped to make a move to Merseyside in January, with Everton a likely destination for the rangey midfielder.

Michael Chedwyn Evans (Man City - striker) Got back on the score sheet last weekend as the City U18 team cruised to a 3-0 win over Crewe. The Wales U19 international notched his sides first goal.

Russell Fry (Hull - midfielder) Has returned to the KC Stadium after spending the first month on loan at Halifax.  The former Wales U16 international made four appearances for the club during that period.

Gerwyn Jones (Tranmere - defender) Jones put in a man of the match performance against a physically strong Walsall side on Saturday the 23rd of September.
Tranmere ran out 2-1 winners. The youngster appears to have completely
recovered from injury and regained full fitness.

Michael Pearson (Oldham - midfielder) Started again for the reserves as they spanked Bury 7-1 on Wednesday night in the Lancashire Senior Cup.  The former Wales U16 international will have no doubt been inspired on by colleague Neal Eardley (Oldham - defender) who has burst on to the international and senior scene.

Shane Sutton (Shrewsbury - defender) Stole in to grab himself another goal as the Shrewsbury Youth team limped to another loss against derby rivals Chester last weekend.  The Wales U17 standby player headed in his sides first goal, but by that stage they were 3-0 down already.  He also started for the reserves in the 1-0 win over Chester this week.

Dale Williams (Shrewsbury - midfielder/forward) Scored the only goal of the game as the Shrewsbury reserves beat Chester in a mini derby on Wednesday.  The Wales U21 international has had a rotten run with injuries and illness this season and will now look to push again for a starting role in Gary Peters' first team.

Karl Yelland (QPR - defender) Captained the U18's last weekend against Wycombe and also got 80 minutes under his belt for the reserves in the 3-0 defeat against Southampton.  Yelland has been in fine form this season with the former Southampton trainee earning international honours with the Wales U19's and travelling with the QPR senior squad in the Carling Cup.
