Young guns news - Sunday 24-Sep- 06

Chad Bond (Port Talbot - striker) Played for the Shrewsbury reserves this week as he looked to make an instant step back up to the Coca-Cola leagues.  The former Swan didn't take long to get involved, scoring his sides second goal in a 3-2 win over Huddersfield.  It still remains to be seen if he has done enough to win a permanent contract at Gay Meadow.

Rob Davies (WBA - midfielder) Returned to action after a lengthy lay off with an ankle injury to put in a very impressive 90 minutes for the WBA reserves this week in the 1-1 draw with Walsall.  The Wales U21 international was at the heart of all the WBA attacks and it was his through ball that led to the eventual opening goal.  The Walsall starting XI contained Wales U19 international Mark Bradley (Walsall - defender) who played the full 90 minutes.

Neal Eardley (Oldham - defender) Penned a new three year pro-contract this week as the Latics looked to ward off any hovering Premiership vultures.  The Wales U21 international was rumoured to be being watched by Liverpool in particular, and the 18 year old will now look to cement his place in the starting line up.

Peter Ferris (Carlisle - striker) Was on the score sheet for Carlisle reserves this week as they beat Preston 2-0 on Wednesday night.  The Preston bench contained Liam Maloney (Preston - midfielder) the former Wales U17 international who was an unused substitute.

Christopher Flynn (Crewe - midfielder) Got a run out for the reserves this week as the seniors basked in the glory of the Carling Cup whipping they dished out to Wigan on Tuesday night.  The young second string ran out 2-1 winners against Stoke City.

James Frayne (Unnatached - striker) Is training with Chester as he looks to earn a contract at the Saunders Honda Stadium.  Frayne is the nephew of former Liverpool goalkeeper David James and made one appearance in a Wales U17 training squad under Ian Rush. "He comes to us with good pedigree and good references, so it is up to him to prove that he is worthy of a full contract." Mark Wright, Chester manager

Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Led by example last weekend as he drove his side to victory with a goal and two assists as the Southampton U18 team beat Birmingham 4-1.  The Wales U21 midfielder struck his sides third goal with a sweetly struck left footer from 25 yards and rounded proceedings off with a well taken finish from the edge of the box.  James was joined in the starting IX by Wales U17 international Ian Jones (Southampton - defender).

Josh Klein-Davis (Bristol City - striker) + James Wilson (Bristol City - defender)
Both got on the score sheet last Saturday for the U18 team, but it was not to be enough as the Robins crashed against Arsenal.  Wales U19 international Wilson got on the score sheet first with a 25 yard screamer before Klein-Davis got his side on level terms with a finish from a good team move.  Unfortunately the joy of getting the equaliser was short lived as the young Gunners added a further two to dampen the mood.

Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers - striker) Nearly clinched three points for his side at the weeked with a strike early in the second half.  The Wales U21 international latched on to a good through ball before showing good composure to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.  Unfortunately his side could not hold on to grab all the points as Darlington equalised in the 90th minute.

Michael Pearson (Oldham - defender) Put in another impressive performance for the Latics reserves this week as they over came a youthful Man City second string.  And the former Wales U16 international nearly got his name on the score sheet with a sublime curler that went just over.

Abdhi Ahmed (Blackburn - striker)
Got his side back to winning way's at the weekend with a goal for the U18's as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Barnsley at Brockhall.  The Wales U17 international raced on to a through ball to smash one past the goalkeeper, but failed to earn his second after spurning a chance from three yards.

Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) Scored with a clinical free kick to give his side a 3-1 lead over Birmingham in a game which they battled to earn all three points.  The Wales U21 struck a sumptuous free kick from 30 yards which rippled the net from a an unfavourable angle.

Kyle Critchell (Southampton - defender) + Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Both returned to second string action on Tuesday night after a weekend away with the Wales U21 team.  It was to be a succesful return with the Saints running out 2-0 winners with both getting 90 minutes game time.  The Saints sealed the win with a goal from a Critchell flick on.  The Fulham starting XI contained Matthew Collins (Fulham - midfielder) who played 43 minutes before coming off.

Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers - striker) Has been speaking about the pressure of trying to make the grade at the Memorial Ground this season.  The Wales U21 international is in the last year of his contract and will have to prove his worth to manager Paul Trollope if he is to stay at the club.
"I'm really enjoying my football again and I'm happy with my life at the moment.  Last season I was a bit down, for obvious reasons, but now I'm enjoying playing for Trolls and Lennie." Lewis Haldane

Michael Johnston (Tranmere - defender) Played the full 90 minutes as Tranmere beat Carlisle 2-1 in the Pontins Holida League.  The Wales U19 international has been given a squad number this season and will now look to make the break through to the senior side.  The Carlisle starting XI contained Peter Ferris (Carlisle - striker) who played for 60 minutes before being withdrawn from the action.

Gerwyn Jones (Tranmere - defender) The 15 year old centre half made a comfortable return after a troublesome groin injury in Tranmere Rover U18 side which saw off
Wrexham 3 - 1 on Friday the 25th of August.

Matthew Smith (Cardiff City - defender) Got in on the scoring act on Saturday as the U18's squandered a great chance to get a win against Crystal Palace.  The Newport born left back smashed in what's deemed to be one of the best every goals seen at Academy level to give his side a 2-1 advantage which unfortunately they couldn't hold on to.

Neil Tayor (Wrexham - midfielder) Scored his sides decisive goal in the 2-1 win against Oldham at the weekend.  The St Asaph born midfielder scored with a powerful free kick which was to be the difference between the sides.

David Cotterill (Bristol City - striker) Warmed up for the must win international against Turkey with a goal for struggling City in their 3-1 win against Northampton on Tuesday night.  The Cardiff born striker slotted in from the spot to score his sides third and to make sure that there was not to be a dramatic comeback.  The starlet who has been at Ashton Gate since the age of 10 must have shined during the live game on SKY, as Wigan splashed out £2 million on him on the final day of the transfer window.

Kyle Critchell (Southampton - defender) + Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Both started for the reserves against Bournemouth on Tuesday night. Critchell played the full 90 minutes with James playing in the defence and coming off after 75 minutes in the 3-1 win.

Adam Davies (Cambridge - defender) Suffered a serious knee injury this week in the Conference encounter with Dagenham and Redbridge.  In his first start of the season the young defender was taken off during the second half and will now have a nervous wait for the swelling to go down before he will know the full extent of the damage.  He will of course now miss the U21 international at Ninian Park this weekend.

Ryan Doble (Southampton - midfielder) Put his side level as the Southampton U16's won a pulsating game 3-2 against Reading at the weekend.  The Torfaen born midfielder scored from the penalty spot to set his side back on the road to victory.

Neal Eardley (Oldham - defender) Played the full 90 minutes again as he looks to cement his first team place under manager John Sheridan this season.  The Llandudno born full back has being a regular since the end of last season and his impressive performances have seen him elevated to the Wales U21 squad.

Russell Fry (Hull - midfielder) Has signed on at Halifax on loan to try and gain some valuable game time away from the KC Stadium.

Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers - striker) Was delighted with his match winning contribution at the weekend as Bristol Rovers beat Shrewsbury 1-0 at the weekend.  The former Southampton trainee opened his account with a low drive as he now looks to stake a regular place in the starting XI should Junior Agogo transfer to Nottingham Forest this week.  This week could be a double celebration for Haldane after a late call up to the Wales U21 squad to replace the injured Jamal Easter.

Andy King (Leicester - striker) Celebrated his call up to the Wales U19 squad with a goal as the Leicester U18's got off the mark with a 3-0 win against Stoke last Saturday.

Michael Nardiello (WBA - striker) Proved he has the same striking genes as his elder brother with a goal for the U18 team as they bounced back from a first weekend defeat with a 3-1 victory over Millwall.  There are distinct similarities to his brother as he celebrates a call up to the England U18 team this week after some impressive performances for the youth and reserve teams.
