Welsh Football Young Guns update news - by Owain Jones.
Young guns news - Sunday 14th May 2006.

Gareth Bale (Southampton - defender) Returned to youth team duty with a bang at the weekend with the Wales U21 international heading in his sides third goal in a 4-0 win over Blackburn to advance to the play off final.  He was joined in the starting XI by fellow U21 internationals Kyle Critchell (defender) and Lloyd James (midfielder)  The Saints will now meet Villa in the final today.  It has also been widely reported that Bale is being coveted by Liverpool and Spurs.

Mark Bradley (Walsall - midfielder) Has been offered a one-year professional contract at the Bescot stadium after some impressive performances for the youth and reserve teams this year.

Ryan Crockford (Reading - midfielder) Has been informed by the club that he will not be offered a professional contract to stay at the Madjeski.  The former Wales U17 squad member has been on loan with Aldershot and will now wait to see if he has done enough to be taken on next season.

Neal Eardley (Oldham - defender) Was another young gun given first team football over the weekend as manager Ronnie Moore gave youth it's head after the Latics failed to make the play offs.  Eardley Jnr played the full 90 minutes and will have made his family proud in what has been a mixed season after the news that brother Sean could not continue his playing career due to a heart problem.  We wish both all the best in their prospective careers.  Llandudno born Eardley is in his second year at Boundary Park was praised by his manager after his display, which resulted in him getting an assist for his sides only goal in a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe."He has got the ability and can only get better, there is no doubt about that.  He didn't have a lot to do defensively but he got in some good tackles and uses the ball well.  There is a lot to work with and he has a heck of a chance." Ronnie Moore, Oldham manager.

David Edwards (Shrewsbury - midfielder) Returned from his ankle injury to claim a starting place in his sides last game of the season against rivals Chester City.  The Wales U20 international played the full 90 minutes with the border town outfit running out 1-0 winners.

Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers - striker) Bagged a double at the weekend but it was not enough to gain any points for his side as Rovers lost 3-2 to Macclesfield.  The Welsh qualified striker scored with a volley and a fierce drive during a weekend in which he picked up an award for young player of the year from the club.

Michael Johnston (Tranmere - defender) Has signed his first professional contract with Tranmere this week.  Johnston the Wales U17 and U19 international has been a regular member of the youth and reserve team this season and may now see next season as his big chance after the Wirral based team got relegated.

Mark Jones (Wrexham - midfielder) Is back at home after having an operation oh his damaged knee this week.  The talented play maker will now need a few weeks rest after having a tear to his cartilage repaired.

Shaun MacDonald (Swansea - midfielder) Was again prominent as the Swans smashed Chesterfield on their way to the play offs.  The midfielder played 71 minutes before making way for the more experienced Tom Williams, but manager Kenny Jackett proved he is not afraid to give youth a go if he thinks they are good enough.

Liam Maloney (Preston - midfielder) Impressively scored and created chances in his teams 4-1 U19 YAL win over Burnley.  On Thursday his sharp wing play always threatened throughout Preston`s 5-2 win over Colchester in the national U19 YAC Final.

Dale Williams (Yeovil - striker) After being on trial at Shrewsbury a month ago made an appearance for Yeovil on Saturday in their final game of the season against Colchester.  The U19 international came on for the last 5 minutes as the Glovers drew 0-0 with Colchester.  He like many of the other we speak of on this news report will now look forward to pre-season so he can get another chance to impress the manager.

Mike Williams (Wrexham - defender) + Marc Williams (Wrexham - striker) Don't get the credit they deserve from me on this web page, probably because youth always seems to be given it's head at the Racecourse and you just take it for granted.  Mike in particular came in for a lot of praise for his mature performance at the heart of the defence.  The Wales U21 international brothers have been very prominent in the Wrexham senior squad this season and both made an appearance yesterday in the 1-1 draw with Darlington.

James Wilson (Bristol City - defender)  Made the subs bench last Saturday as Gary Johnson gave him a look at first team football in preparation for next season.  Wilson has been in fine form for the reserves and youth team, culminating in the emergence of Premiership scouts at youth games having a look at the U17 international.  Even though the young defender was an unused sub at the weekend, he will now be even hungrier to make the step up over pre-season.

Young guns news - Sunday 7th May 2006.

Gareth Bale (Southampton - defender) Was once again a star for the senior team as they beat Leicester 2-0 at St Mary's.  The 16 year old Cardiff born youngster showed good vision, pace and delivery and will now look forward to next season and maybe a prolonged run in the first team.

David Cotterill (Bristol City - striker) Was named Young Player of the Year by the Supporters Club last week.  It has been a superb year for the Cardiff born striker, as he earned his first international cap and also became a regular member of the Bristol City starting XI.  He also got on the score sheet last Saturday with his sides only goal in a 1-1 draw with Swindon Town, running at the defence before curling in an exquisite effort in to the top hand of the net.

Adam Davies (Cambridge - defender) Returned to the first team squad last weekend after being knocked out against Exeter last month.  The Wales U21 international received clearance to resume full training earlier this week following a brain scan and was an unused sub in the 2-1 defeat to Dagenham and Redbridge.

Neal Eardley (Oldham - defender) Could come into the reckoning for a first team place as the Latics finish the season with a home game against Scunthorpe. The Wales U19 international may get the call as manager Ronnie Moore takes a look at some players as he plans for next season.

David Edwards (Shrewsbury - midfielder) Has had an x-ray on his injured ankle which shows no bone injury, just swelling and a sprain.  The swelling has now subsided and the midfielder is strapped up and back in training and could play against Chester this weekend.

Tom Evans (Swindon - defender) Seems to be enjoying the tail end of the 2005/06 season as the Wales U17 international got another start for the reserves this week.  The young defender played 70 minutes before making way for a replacement in his sides 2-1 loss to Cheltenham.

Christopher Flynn (Crewe - midfielder) + Owain Fon Williams (Crewe - goalkeeper) Have been given the good news that they are to be retained at Gresty Road after the relegated Railwaymen decided to offer them professional contracts for next season.  Williams is the only one of the nine scholars to have been close to the first team this season having been on the subs bench.  Both will now look to push on in pre-season to catch the eye of manager Dario Gradi.

Wayne Hennessey (Wolves - goalkeeper) Produced a fine display under pressure as the Wolves U18 rearguard came under a stiff examination by the Academy League Champions Blackburn.  Hennessey who was named in the U21 squad last week pulled off some fine saves as young Wolves ran out 2-0 winners.

Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Scored his sides only goal as the Southampton U18 team drew 1-1 with Cardiff last weekend.  The Wales U21 international scored from the spot as the Saints took a share of the spoils as they sealed their spot in the end of season play offs against Blackburn.

David Jones (Man Utd - midfielder) Although I have decided I won't waste too much time on players that are obviously not committed to the Welsh cause, I just thought I would give it one last write up as the news is a bit slow this week.  Well, it seems that the Old Trafford outfit are set to hand the midfield schemer a place in the first team squad for pre-season campaign.  The former reserve team skipper is keen to prove his worth at United, although NEC would like to bring him back to Holland in another loan arrangement.  If Jones fails to earn a place in the Carling Cup winners' squad for the 2006/2007 campaign, then Ferguson is likely to agree to send the youngster to NEC again to obtain more experience.

Shaun MacDonald (Swansea - midfielder) Was showered with praise by manager Kenny Jackett after being thrown in at the deep end for the crucial game against Southend at the Liberty last weekend.  The Wales U21 international thrived in the heat of battle and played more like an experienced senior pro rather than a youth team player. "The big pitch at the Liberty Stadium is crying out for athletic footballers, people who can get there and then use the ball when they do.  Shaun will develop into one of those players." Kenny Jacket, Swansea manager.

Lewin Nyatanga (Derby - defender) Capped an amazing season by winning the club's Young Player of the Year award last weekend.  Burton Born Nyatanga, in his first year as a professional with the Rams, is already the youngest ever Wales U21 captain, both these achievements came before going on to be the Wales' youngest ever international in march.

Gareth Owen (Oldham - defender) Has handed in a transfer request after finding his path to the first team blocked of late.  Owen states that things have not worked out and was unhappy about travelling from his base in the Potteries as his reasons for the requests.

Matthew Smith (Cardiff - defender) Scored with a vicious drive to set his side underway last Saturday, the Newport born full back lashed in a 20 yard shot to put his side 1-0 up.  His side second and clincher was scored by James Simpson (Cardiff - defender) who sealed his sides win as he put in Kyle Basset's cross to make it 2-0 to the Bluebirds in the U18 Academy fixture against Watford in midweek.  Simpson the Cardiff born youngster notched his goal with 9 minutes to go as the capitol youngsters finished their academy season in style.

Brian Stock (Preston - midfielder) Who was only making his second appearance at Deepdale since signing from Bournemouth in January scored against Leeds last Sunday.  The Welsh U21 international curled in a superb free kick into the bottom right hand corner to score his sides first goal in the 2-0 win.  Strangely Stock has been over looked for the Senior Wales squad for the double header along with Premiership bound John Oster.

Rhoys Wiggins (Crystal Palace - defender) Who was last week named in the Wales U21 squad got a double boost as the Palace reserves thrashed Pompey 5-1 this week.  The young full back will now hope that the senior side can do the business in the play offs and that his club become a Premiership team next season.

Dale Williams (Yevoil - striker) Got on the score sheet as a young Yeovil reserve side beat a young Swansea reserve side 7-1 at Port Talbot afc. Dale playing at left wing was constant threat with is  running at the swans defence and caused a lot of problems with his speed and control of ball.

James Wilson (Bristol City - defender)  Had another good performance for the reserves in a 2-0 win over Swindon Town last Saturday morning, he played the first half at right back and the second at centre back.  The Wales U17 international was a late inclusion in the squad for the final game of the season against Southend.  With Gary Johnson deciding to dangle the carrott of senior football in front of the talented defender as he prepares for next season.  "James is a pacey, good footballer.  He's 6ft 3ins and still growing, can see a pass, is aggressive and quick.  He fully deserves this chance to travel." Gary Johnson, Bristol City manager.
