Football Young Guns update news - by Owain Jones.
Young guns news -
Sunday 26th March 2006. Stephen Cann (Derby - goalkeeper) Put
in some fine saves to keep Liverpool U18's at bay as the Rams got back on track
after a weekend loss to Man Utd by beating the Reds last Tuesday. He was joined
in the starting XI by Mitch Booth
(midfielder) who played the full 90
minutes of the 1-0 win.
Simon
Church (Reading - striker) Started for
the second string this week against Bournemouth and was soon into the action
with some powerful shots and an assist for the first goal. Church who qualifies
for Wales through a Welsh grandfather from Newport played the full 90
minutes.
Ryan Crockford (Reading
- midfielder) Has been loaned out on
work experience to Conference side Aldershot Town until the end of the season.
He will still be eligible to play for the reserves whilst on work
experience.
"Ryan is a young lad who is a central midfield
player and a good passer of the ball. He has caught my eye on a number of
occasions. We will be able to bring him to the club which would be a good
experience for him". Terry Brown. Aldershot manager.
Lloyd Evans (Cardiff - defender) Got a goal as the Cardiff U18 team produced a miraculous
come back to beat Ipswich 4-2 after being 2-0 down at half time. Evans a Welsh
speaking central defender got his of his sides four second half goals in a 45
minute performance which will have pleased the watching
coaches.
Callum Hart
(Bournemouth - defender) Will be out
for the next two weeks after pulling his hamstring in the 1-0 win over Yeovil.
I am sure after the U21 international against Northern Ireland that manager
Brian Flynn will be keen to get his experienced older players such as Hart
and David Edwards (Shrewsbury -
midfielder) back fighting fit for the
play off against Estonia in May.
Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Although on the losing side in the FA Youth Cup tie with Liverpool, was
praised for a captain's performance. All write ups note that U21 cap James was
a constant driving force in midfield as he put in the meaty tackles and linked
up play with some excellent link up play and passing. He also showed that
he has a few strings to his bow with an impressive showing at the heart of the
defence as the reserves beat Coventry 2-0 on Wednesday
night.
David Jones (Man Utd/NEC
Nijmegen) Has impressed the staff so
much that they are keen for the talented midfielder to stay on at the club for
another season. Whether Sir Alex will oblige is another matter, but the club
are interested in taking more Utd players on loan next
season.
Mark Jones (Cardiff -
striker) Got a hat trick as the U17
standby hit man ran riot as the young Bluebirds thrashed Afan Lido 6-0 in the
FAW Youth Cup. He was joined on the score sheet by Kyle Bassett (striker) and Scott McCoubrey
(midfielder).
Michael Pearson (Oldham - defender) Played for the reserves this week as the Latics took on
Huddersfield Town at the Galpharm Stadium. The Bangor born defender was
introduced after an early injury in the 25th minute and put himself about as the
Latics cruised to a 2-0 win.
Jamie Price (Birmingham - midfielder) Got 90 minutes for the reserves against Bolton this week as he looks to
progress at St Andrews. The Wales U19 international will look to get a run of
games under his belt now as he builds for next season and a shot at breaking
into the Wales U21 side.
Tom
Sparey (Caersws - defender) Will spend
the rest of this season with League of Wales side Caersws after being released
by Shrewsbury. He follows a well trodden path to the mid Wales side, who have
former Gay Meadow first teamers Ross Stephens and Chris Venables in their side
already.
Brian Stock (Preston -
midfielder) Scored his sides first
goal as the Lillywhites beat Bolton 4-1 to advance to the final of the
Lancashire Senior Cup. The former Wales U21 midfielder scored with a sweetly
struck free kick after 15 minutes to give his side a lead they would not
relinquish and they will now have to wait and see whether they face Bury
or Oldham in the final.
Jamie
Tolley (Shrewsbury - midfielder) Could
well be on his way from Gay Meadow in the summer as the club await his
decision on a contract offer. It seems that the Wales U21 is in the same
situation as Luke Rodgers last year, because with him being under 24 and the
club having offered him a deal, they are entitled to
compensation.
Ben Vangucci
(Rotherham - defender) Was in reserve
team action once again for The Millers this week in a pulsating 5-3 thriller
against Tranmere. The central defender who was born in Hanover, Germany but
qualifies through a mother from Wrexham played the full 90 minutes as Rotherham
edged Tranmere.
Owain Warlow
(Lincoln - midfielder) Has accepted a
deal from the club to become a professional with the Red
Imps.
Dale Williams (Yeovil -
striker) Scored another two goals last
weekend as the Yeovil U18 team won 3-1 away to Swindon. The brace takes his
tally to 11 goals in the last 11 games, and he also picked up the Man of the
Match award. Dale has also followed in the footsteps of Rhys Powell (Bolton -defender) after travelling to Gay Meadow for a trial with the border
town outfit. And it was to be a great trial as well, with the Wales U19 striker
bagging himself a goal with a glancing header to take Shrewsbury through to the
Pontins League Cup Final and he will now wait to see whether manager Gray Peters
will ask him to stay for a months loan. The Shrewsbury bench contained Wales
U17 squad member (Shane Sutton
-defender) but interestingly the
Hull side that they defeated did not contain Russell Fry (Hull - midfielder). "Dale did alright but is actually a left winger but likes to play up
front as well. He did alright and maybe next week if we can have him back he
can play on the left wing." Gary Peters, Shrewsbury
manager.
Gareth Williams
(Colchester/Blackpool - striker) Got
off to a perfect start for his new club with a goal on debut after coming on as
a second half sub. The Barry born striker struck the only goal of the game to
claim all three points for his new side. He will spend the rest of the season
on loan at Bloomfield Road.
Owain Fon Williams (Crewe - goalkeeper) Put in some fine saves to keep the Forest U18 strikers at bay as the
Railwaymen earned a draw last weekend. Williams and U19 international
Christopher Flynn
(midfielder) who was recalled after
missing the last game, got through 90 minutes in the 1-1
draw.
Karl Yelland (QPR -
defender) Scored his first goal for
years, and that's his own words last Saturday as the Rangers U18 beat Rushden
and Diamonds 2-1 to edge to second spot in the league. The former Wales U16
international scored with a 20 yard free kick that deceived the goalkeeper.
"In fact it was my first goal for about four
years!" Karl Yelland.
Young guns news -
Sunday 19th March 2006.
Both
Gareth Bale(Southampton - defender)
and Lloyd James(Southampton - midfielder)
suffered
heartbreak as Southampton U-18s lost out on penalties
in the FA Youth Cup semi final against Liverpool.
Both players played the full 120 minutes as Southampton
drew the game 4-4 on aggregate. Saints caption James
was successful from the spot as was dual qualified
Michael Nardiello(Liverpool - striker)
who came on as second half
substitute for Liverpool, he also converted his
spot kick as Liverpool won 5-4 on penalties.
Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) Scored his
second goal in as many games as the defender again showed that his making great
progress as the season enters the final straight. The former Wales U17
international controlled in the area before swivelling smartly to ram the ball
past the MK Dons keeper. The U18 side have now recorded their third victory in
four games as the finish the season strongly.
Kyle Bassett (Cardiff - striker) Will be very happy this
week after scoring the only goal of the game as the Bluebirds came away from
Bournemouth with all three points. The striker will be take even greater
pleasure having endured a nightmare 12 month period away from the game with
injury.
Ryan Crockford (Reading - midfielder) Was once again
involved with the reserves this week as he built on some very impressive
performances for the youths and second string over the past few weeks. It was a
win and three points for the Royals on Wednesday night, with Crockford getting
another 90 minutes under his belt as his side ran out 2-1 winners. He was
joined in the second half by the industrious SimonChurch(Reading - striker).
Rob Davies (WBA - midfielder) Picked up an assist last
Monday as the Baggies second string beat Newcastle 2-0. The Wales U21
international put in an inch perfect cross from the left for his team mate to
power home the first goal of the evening. The former Wrexham youth team player
made a superb foil for the returning Hungarian international, Zoltan Gera during
an impressive win.
Michael Chedwyn Evans (Man City - striker) Got on for the
final quarter as the City beat Newcastle 3-2 in the first leg of the FA Youth
Cup semi final. The City bench contained Wales U17 captain Scott Evans
(midfielder) who was an unused sub.
Stuart Fleetwood (Hereford - striker) Turned the ball home
from 12 yards to start his sides come back from 2-0 down last Saturday. The
Wales U21 international scored as his side made a miraculous recovery to gain a
point against the Conference leaders.
Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers - striker) Scored his first
goal in 13 months on Saturday to break a horrible drought. Unfortunately for
the Welsh qualified striker, his stunning goal brought no points with the home
side losing 2-1 to Notts County.
Carl Jones (Cardiff - midfielder) Has left Cardiff City
and joined League of Wales side Bangor. "He's a jinxy left winger. I saw him play for Wales U16's last season and
he was the best player in the game. I would expect him to have grown and
improved since then as well. When someone like him comes along you can't afford
to miss out" Clayton Blackmore, Bangor City player/manager
David Jones (Man Utd/NEC Nijmegen) Scored the killer goal
as NEC Nijmegen overturned Heracles Almelo 2-0 to keep their Euro hopes alive in
the Dutch league. The United midfielder fired home just after half-time to seal
NEC’s first win in five games and keep them four points off the European playoff
zone.
Daniel Parslow (Cardiff - defender) Has seen his trial
period down the M4 in Swansea blighted by injury and bad weather as he looks for
life away from Ninian Park. With Dave Jones trimming his playing staff as he
looks to create his own squad for promotion, it seems the time has come for U21
international Parslow to move on.
Sam Pearce (Bristol City - goalkeeper) + Christian Ribiero (Bristol
City - defender) + James Wilson (Bristol City - defender) All played
their part as the U18 team downed the Canaries last Saturday to pick up an
impressive victory. Ribero and Wilson who was the man of the match in the win
against the Canaries will join Josh Klein-Davis (Bristol City -
striker) in the U17 squad for the friendly against USA next month.
Lewis Powell (Bristol Rovers - striker) Could have had a
hat trick but had to make do with just the one goal as teh Rovers U18 team went
undefeated at the top of the table last weekend. The Wales U19 squad member had
one shot tipped on to the post and hit the crossbar before nailing a diving
header in the last minute of the normal 90 against Plymouth.
Sam Tucknott (Wycombe - midfielder/striker) Put in an
impressive all round performance as Wycombe over came Pompey 2-0 to boost their
position to fifth in the South East Conference. Welsh U17 intertnational
Tucknott has disappeared off the radar slightly after leaving Crystal Palace
academy and will now hope that his high flying side can claim promotion at the
end of this season.
Gareth Williams (Colchester - striker) Has joined
Blackpool until the end of the season. Chances have been limited for the ex
Wales U21 striker this season and his career has stalled slightly, and he will
now hope to re-ignite the flames in the bright lights of Bloomfield Road.
Karl Yelland (QPR - defender) Long searching balls created
problems for the Colchester youth team last weekend. The former Wales U16
international probed with long passes which resulted in a goal a game which they
would go on to win 3-0.
Young guns news -
Sunday 12th March 2006.
Gareth Bale (Southampton - defender) Got called up to the
Wales U17's squad this week and also got another run out at reserve team level.
Although things didn't go quite as he would have liked, with the Saints being
stung by the Hornets of Watford who ran out 2-1 winners. Both Bale
and Lloyd
James(Southampton
– midfielder)
were in action on Friday evening as Southampton
Under 18s lost their first leg FA Youth Cup semi-final
match against Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield.
Grant Basey (Charlton - defender) Was an unlikely goal
scorer last weekend as the young Addicks secured the prize scalp of the
Southampton U18 team. The former Wales U17 international scored with a free
kick that curled around the wall and nestled in the bottom corner from 25 yards
out. The defender has been improving greatly over the past couple of weeks
according to the official website and will be another player to have an eye on
the next U19 squad I'm sure.
Mitch Booth (Derby - midfielder) + Stephen Cann (Derby -
goalkeeper) Played the full 90 minutes as the Derby U18 team thrashed
Sheffield Utd 5-0 last Saturday. The two were joined in the starting XI by
Jo Arnold (Derby - striker) who was replaced after 30 minutes
with an injury. The win keeps the Rams hard on the heels of Leeds in the race
for the top of Premier League Academy Group D.
Simon Church (Reading - striker) Buoyed by his experience
with the reserves last week grabbed a goal for the U18 team in the 2-2 draw with
Bristol City. The Welsh qualified player was up against two of the Wales U17
squad in Josh Klein-Davis(striker) Christian Ribiero (defender)
and James Wilson (defender) who started for the
Robins.
Ryan Crockford (Reading - midfielder) Started again this
week for the Reading reserve team as they took on Aldershot. And again the
former Wales U17 international impressed with one assist and a lot of probing
passes and creativity from the right side of midfield. He was joined in the
squad by Simon Chruch (striker) who was an unused sub.
Rob Davies (WBA - midfielder) Was another Wales U21 squad
member to get another starting spot in the reserves this week. Davies who was a
second half sub in the 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland played 83 minutes in
midfield before being replaced in a game that petered out into a 1-1 draw.
David Edwards (Shrewsbury - midfielder) Had well and truly
shaken off the effects of the ankle injury that forced him to miss last weeks
U21 game at Stebonheath by the time the weekend came around. The former Wales
U20 international played the full 90 minutes and scored his sides second goal
after getting in behind the defence before poking home past Glyn Garner. He
also ran away comfortably with the Man of the Match award in a very industrious
and impressive performance.
Joe Jacobsen (Cardiff - defender) Had the honour of being
made reserve team captain this week as the Bluebirds took on Plymouth at Ninian
Park. And it was U21 international Jacobsen who created the opportunity for
City's second goal with a weaving run into the box which was stopped only by a
clumsy foul. The resulting penalty was dispatched by fellow U21 international
Jamal Easter (striker) with the game finishing 2-0 in blustery
conditions.
Lewin Nyatanga (Derby - defender) Crowned a fantastic week
by winning the young apprentice of the year award last Sunday. After becoming
the youngest player in Welsh history to win his first senior international cap,
the classy defender picked up the title after fending off great competition from
the likes of Rhoys Wiggins (Crystal Palace - defender).
Michael Pearson (Oldham - defender) Was the only one of
the Latics Welsh connection to get a run out for the reserves this week as the
North Walian got 90 minutes under his belt against Forest on Wednesday night.
It was to be a good night for the defender as well with the Latics beating
Forest 2-1 on the night.
Ben Vangucci (Rotherham - defender) Played the full 90
minutes for the debt ridden Rotherham second string this week. The glamorously
named Vangucci got a whole game of senior football under his belt as The Millers
drew 1-1 with Barnsley in a game they dominated.
Dale Williams (Yeovil - striker) Has turned into the chief
tormentor for Cirencester as the U18 team once again put them to the sword.
Dale scored once taking his tally to three in two games for the Wales U19 star.
Young guns news -
Sunday 5th March 2006.
Abdhi Ahmed (Blackburn - striker) Continued
his fine form of late to assist his side in a 3-1 win over Bolton. The former
Wales U19 international is enjoying his post Christmas season at Brockhall, and
his pressure and pass created his sides killer third goal which keeps Rovers at
the top of Academy Group C.
Gareth Bale (Southampton - defender) Returned from
international duty for 20 minutes action for the youth team on the weekend, but
that was not his last game time of the week after once again making it into the
reserve team starting line up for Tuesday's match against Coventry. He played
the full 90 minutes as the Saints ran out 2-0 winners with an added bonus of a
clean sheet for the Wales U17 international.
Mitch Booth (Derby - midfielder) + Stephen Cann (Derby -
goalkeeper) Played 90 minutes in a behind closed doors friendly for the
Rams this week. The Wales youth internationals both got 90 minutes as Derby
came from behind to beat local rivals Nottingham Forest 2-1.
Mark Bradley (Walsall - midfielder) Skippered his side
into the final of the Midland Youth team Cup on Monday night. The captain also
got on the score sheet with a deflected shot to claim the sides first goal in a
3-0 win over Hednesford.
Simon Church (Reading - striker) Joined former Wales U17
midfielder RyanCrockford (Reading -
midfielder) in the reserves this week. And it was Crockford who got up
and running quickest, his quick feet and probing passing causing all kinds of
problems for lowly Woking. It did not take long for the creative midfielder to
get his goal either, after great work by winger Church who skipped past four
defender on a run that took a lunge from a defender to bring him down for a
penalty that Crockford converted.
Matthew Collins (Fulham - midfielder) Is progressing well
after suffering from a recurrence of a hamstring injury that has so far blighted
his season and put paid to any hopes he had of making any national squads or
getting more senior football at reserve team level. It is hoped that Collins
will be back in full training in a couple of weeks.
Michael Chedwyn Evans (Man City - midfielder) Must have
impressed after his assist set up the only goal of the game in the FA Youth Cup
win over Utd, because he made an appearance in the City reserve squad this week
for the game against Bolton. Although an unused sub in the 2-0 win, he will
have savoured another trip with the second string.
David Edwards (Shrewsbury - midfielder) Shook off an ankle
injury which saw him pull out of the Wales U21 squad to play three quarters of a
reserve team match against Sheffield Utd on Monday night. The former Wales U20
international scored his sides third goal and put in a very impressive
performance in front of manager Gary Peters.
Christopher Flynn (Crewe - midfielder) Proved an
influential figure for the U18 team last Saturday after returning from injury.
The midfielders dangerous passing and work in midfield helped the Railwaymen to
a 1-1 draw with Everton. It looked like all points were heading home to
Merseyside but a freak own goal by Wales U19 defender Matthew
Holt gave Crewe a share of the spoils. Another player who will be
pleased with an afternoons work will be Owain Fon Williams (Crewe -
goalkeeper) who was a part of the Wales U21 squad this week.
Wayne Hennessey (Wolves - goalkeeper) Played his first
game for five months last weekend as the Wolverhampton U18 team beat FA Youth
Cup semi finalists Liverpool 2-1. With the future looking uncertain for
Sam Pearce (Bristol City - goalkeeper) after commentary from
the Wales U21 game noting that he was to be released, Brian Flynn will be glad
to see Hennessey back between the sticks with massive games against Estonia on
the horizon.
Lloyd James (Southampton - midfielder) Played the full 90
minutes as the U18 team thrashed Ipswich 4-1 at the weekend. The Wales U21
standby midfielder will have still been celebrating signing on at St Mary's
until 2008 last week and the victory will have been even more sweeter for it.
He was joined in the second half by Gareth Bale (Southampton -
defender) who will have been used sparingly after his trip to Lugano
with Wales U17's this week.
Jon Kift (Cardiff - striker) Made the most of the absence
of Jamal Easter and the injury to Curtis McDonald to score for the reserves in
midweek as they drew 2-2 with the Pilgrims of Plymouth. The former Wales U17
international was set up by Andrea Fererretti and struck after coming on from
the subs bench.
Daniel Nardiello (Barnsley - striker) Has been told by
manager Andy Ritchie that he is getting nowhere soon with the club looking to
keep every striking option during the run in to the end of the season. It seems
that Yeovil and Notts County have enquired about the former Man Utd squad member
as they too look to bolster their strike force before the end of the season.
Lewin Nyatanga (Derby - defender) Was back in the senior
side that beat Plymouth 1-0 at the weekend. After being taken out of the firing
line to get a much needed breather over the past few weeks, the talented
youngster was back in as former Academy boss Terry Westley tries to guide his
side away from the relegation trap door and to safety.
Lewis Powell (Bristol Rovers - striker) Bagged a brace to
give his side the advantage in a 3-2 win over Swansea youth last weekend.
Powell claimed his first after a ball over the top set him free to fire in off
the up right, his second came from the spot to claim all three points. One of
the Swansea goals was scored by Wales U17 international Daniel
Lancey (forward) who ran half the length of the pitch to score
a fantastic individual goal. It was a double delight week for Powell as well, with the hit man grabbing
another two goals as the reserves beat Gloucester City 2-1 in the
Gloucestershire FA Senior Challenge Cup. He struck his first from the penalty
spot and secured the win with a calmly rifled shot past the goalkeeper which
sealed their place in the semi-finals."Lewis is a player who will always score goals, there are bits of his game
he needs to work on, but he will always be in the right place at the right
time. He reads things well, he has confidence, and although not blessed with
pace, he makes up for it with other attributes." Tony Ricketts, reserve team
coach.
Rhys Powell (Bolton - defender) Got another run out for
the Shrewsbury second string this week against Sheffield Utd in a game which saw
them power to a 4-1 win. Powell got his first taste of football at Gay Meadow
with a run out for the reserves last week in their 4-0 loss against Carlisle.
It is thought that manager Gary Peters is running the rule on a few trialists as
he looks to bolster his squad.
Dale Williams (Yeovil - striker) Scored twice and got two
assists as the Yeovil U18 team put Cirencester to the sword at the weekend.
With the Glovers strike force not firing under manager Steve Thompson, Dale may
now look to see if he can further his career at senior level.
Matthew Williams (Notts County - striker) Will stay on
loan with Conference side Tamworth after scoring five goals in seven games for
the struggling side. Williams a former Utd trainee has only scored once for
County since moving from Old Trafford and will relish getting regular games for
his new side after signing on until the end of the season. With the Conference
now becoming stronger it seems that Wales Semi-Pro manager will have quite a few
former Wales youth team players to choose from when he gathers his next squad.
Off the top of my head I can think of Michael Brough(Forest Green Rovers)Adam Davies (Cambridge -
defender) Stuart Fleetwood (Hererford) Lee Fowler (Scarborough) Gavin Hurren
(Kidderminster) Danny Slatter (Gravesend and Northfleet) Matthew Somner
(Aldershot) to name but a few .
