WALES INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL YOUNG GUNS BLOG

Latest Young guns blog by John Jones

Marcus Dackers (Brighton and Hove Albion
on loan at Lancing FC) Midfielder, born 2003

Marcus has been constantly involved with Wales teams from the time of his early teenage years as a schoolboy and then this season in his status in fulltime football as a member of the national U-17 squad. In his first season as a scholar with Brighton, he has made a few appearances for the U-18 team as it has comprised mostly of second year scholars. In late February he joined Lancing, a somewhat unusual occurrence for a player in the early stages of his career. Though the timing only allowed for him to assist them in a couple of games, it was sufficient for him to impress and so the arrangement proved beneficial.

Jay Foulston (Newport County on loan at Chippenham Town) Defender, born 2000
Jay made his first team debut for Newport when introduced off the bench for a brief appearance in the EFL Cup a couple of seasons ago and then played in a couple of EFL Trophy games soon after that time. He added a couple more appearances in the EFL Trophy last season and has had numerous occasions on the bench in League 2 matches in those two seasons but did not get to make his debut at that level. He was loaned out to Merthyr for the second half of last season and has similarly been with Chippenham for this one. He did get to face an EFL team when playing for the club against Northampton in the first round of the FA Cup.

    Niall Huggins Forward, born 2000
Matthew Turner Goalkeeper, born 2001 (Leeds United)

Following on from a successful time as a scholar, Niall is in his first year as a fulltime professional with Leeds. He is a member of the U-23 squad and has made a significant contribution to the team, playing in around half of the games they have competed this season. He has also received some noteworthy praise for the quality of his play in some of the match reports that have been published. Having signed last year for just one season, he will be hoping that his performances will have persuaded club management to offer him a renewal. Matthew was signed by the club from Pontardawe and immediately joined the scholar programme upon doing so. This is his second season of being part of the U-18 squad and has done well, playing in more than half the games that team contested. He will also be awaiting the club's decision on the composition of their squads for next season.

McCauley Power ( Hull City) Midfielder, born 2002
I did not know that McCauley was eligible to represent Wales until seeing his name in the list Neil publishes and updates each week about young guns in action. In his first year as a scholar with the club this season, he has appeared in more than half of the games the U-18 team has played with a mix of either starting or off the bench being in almost equal number. His name now adds to a very large group born in 2002, available to represent the nation at U-19 level next season.

Harvey Rew (Portsmouth) Defender/Midfielder, born 2002
Starting his first year as a scholar with the club as the season began, Harvey established his role as a regular member of the club's U-18 team after also making appearances last season. The quality of his play must have impressed the coaching staff as he was assigned for first team duty when selected to start an EFL Trophy game in the latter months of 2019. Obviously a very memorable occasion for Harvey, one that he will be anxious to repeat as soon as possible. He did not have any further first team involvement as the season progressed, but management must believe they can enhance his progress by exposing him to tougher competition than youth team matches when it is appropriate.

Will Russ (Leicester City) Forward, born 2002
Will's first involvement with a Wales team occurred when he was selected for the schoolboy Victory Shield squad a couple of seasons ago. At that time, he was a member of the academy at Chesterfield, but Leicester arranged for him to join their club a few months later. Since joining the Foxes, he has been a regular selection for their U-18 team, playing in most of their games both last season and this one. He will also be eligible for the team next season as a second year scholar. Will continued his connection with Wales teams as a member of last season's U-17 squad and his aim will be to increase his cap collection as a candidate for the U-19 squad next season.

Charlie Savage (Manchester United) Midfielder, born 2003
As his father before him, Charlie developed his skills in United's academy ranks and this season has been his first as a scholar with them. He has played a few times for the club's U-18 team and will likely play much more frequently next season. An eventual career drawing a favourable comparison with the achievements and successes of Robbie is undoubtedly both a hope and aim for him, one that he is managing to be productive in doing so up to this time. He has started to gather his own collection of Wales caps when helping the U-17 team produce successful results earlier in the season. It would have been increased had not there been the need for cancellation of the scheduled UEFA elite qualification tournament a few weeks ago.

Frazer Thomas (Cardiff City) Midfielder, born 2002
Frazer is a first year scholar with Cardiff after previously being affiliated with the club in their academy teams. After making one appearance for the U-18 team last season, he has been more involved in this one, either starting or being used as a substitute in about half of the games played. Fraser was selected to play for a Wales team which competed at U-15 international level three seasons ago.
