    YOUNG GUNS BLOG

Latest Young guns blog by John Jones

Cameron Berry (Swansea City – on loan at Carmarthen Town, Central midfielder, Born 2000)
Jack Bodenham (Cardiff City, Centre half, Born 1999)
Gabe Ellis (Accrington Stanley – on loan at Skelmersdale, Forward, Born 2002)
Owen Hesketh (Wolves, Midfielder, Born 2002)
Luke Rees (Hull City, Forward, Born 2002)
Ethen Vaughan (Norwich City, Right back, 2001)

Cameron Berry (Swansea City – on loan at Carmarthen Town)
Having progressed through the academy and scholar programmes at Swansea, Cameron is now in his second season as a fulltime professional with the club and was at around the middle of what was intended as a half season loan arrangement between the Swans and Welsh Premier League club Carmarthen, when the necessary halt to football matches occurred. If it is sensible to allow the resumption of sporting events in a timely manner whereby the completion of this season occurs, I'm sure Cameron will complete the intended length of stay in west Wales. There are numerous examples of young players benefiting from the experience gained during loan periods at WPL clubs, hopefully Cameron will be able to reflect on a similar positive element in his career development.

    Jack Bodenham (Cardiff City)
Jack is another young man in the second season of his life as a fulltime professional player. He joined Cardiff from local football somewhat later than most do in their schoolboy years, progressing to a scholar status a couple of years later and then graduating to his present situation. The second half of last season was a period that Jack was loaned to WPL club TNS, one that was assessed as being a successful step in his development as he adjusted to his initial exposure to the demands of first team football. He continued gathering the necessary experience for him to continually adapt and hone his skills when spending time on loan at Hereford FC during the first half of this season. The aim going forward will be to perform capably and confidently when challenged by higher quality opponents than previously encountered.

Gabe Ellis (Accrington Stanley – on loan at Skelmersdale)
When football came to a halt, Gabe had started the loan arrangement between the two clubs a few weeks earlier. Although it had only been a short while, he was making a favourable impression as he gained a new experience. In his second year as a scholar at Accrington, Gabe had previously been a regular member of their U-18 team in similar fashion to how he was utilized last season. With the remainder of the football season cancelled for clubs such as Skelmersdale who operate in the lower levels of the pyramid, a return to play for them is unlikely. Gabe has played for Wales when he was selected as a member of the U-15 squad assembled for a couple of friendly matches.

    Owen Hesketh (Wolves)
Owen was a member of the Manchester City academy during his schoolboy years but moved to Wolves prior to the start of this season and is now a first year scholar at the club. He was included in the matchday squad for their U-18 team on only a few occasions during the first half of the season, but frequency has increased significantly since the turn of the year. It suggests that he may well become a much more regular inclusion in the side next season. Doing so, will not only be important in the development of his club career, but also prompt increased attention from those involved in the selection of Wales teams. He has featured regularly in Wales teams over the last few years and was in the squad that contested the Victory Shield competition matches a couple of seasons ago. Last season, he continued the increase in his cap collection when in the squad that took part in the UEFA U-17 qualification tournament. He is eligible at U-19 level next season.

    Luke Rees (Hull City)
Luke started his time as a scholar at Hull at the beginning of this season and has been in the squad for most of the games the U-18 team has played before the suspension of activities. He has appeared in approximately two thirds of those games, the composition of which, were an equal amount of starting assignments and introductions off the bench. It does indicate that Luke has settled in well at the good level of competition he has been involved with, providing some signs that he has the potential to possibly develop a good career. Another positive occurrence is that he has already been elevated to become a member of the U-23 squad at the club on a few occasions and did make two appearances off the bench for the team. Luke's name will be amongst what is a very lengthy list of players who have eligibility for U-19 international football next season. One of his aims will be to do well enough to impress the selectors and add to the previous time he was in a Wales squad during his schoolboy days.

    Ethen Vaughan (Norwich City)
In his first season as a scholar at Norwich, Ethen had a significant role for their U-18 team, playing in all but a couple of their games. It continued in the same manner during the first few weeks of this season but then he sustained an injury which kept him on the sidelines for a long period as he rehabilitated. He was in fact missing from the team for four months before regaining full fitness and being ready to play again in mid-February. Of course, he was only able to play in a couple of games, one of those for the U-23 team, before everything stopped. Ethen will be hoping that the Norwich management team have been impressed enough to retain him beyond this season. If that is so, he will move into the U-23 squad.
