    Weekend Round-Up 29th August-1st September

    Round up.
Player round up by Sophia Beresford.

    Premier League

    Burnley 0-0 Man Utd

Burnley's David Jones came close to taking the lead against the club where he began his career, but his free kick struck the bar. Still, it means Burnley have their first point on the board, and a point at home to Manchester United isn't bad. I'm sure Burnley would happily swap their relegation battle for Man Utd's Europa League battle. Sam Vokes remains out for Burnley with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

    Newcastle 3-3 Crystal Palace

Wayne Hennessey returned to the bench after keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 League Cup victory over Walsall. And guess what: Palace didn't keep a clean sheet and didn't win, though they did get their first point of the season. Jonny Williams, another League Cup starter, was also an unused substitute for Palace, while Joe Ledley missed out due to a groin injury.

Paul Dummett was on the bench for Newcastle, who picked up their second point and their first three league goals.

    Swansea 3-0 West Brom

Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams played 90 minutes for Swansea after being rested in the League Cup. They helped Swansea to keep a clean sheet and continue their 100% start to the season. Jazz Richards was on the bench for Swansea.

Boaz Myhill was on the bench for West Brom after saving three penalties to knock Oxford United out of the League Cup. West Brom lost for the first time this season, which sounds quite good till you realise they're in the bottom three with two points.

    Tottenham 0-3 Liverpool

Joe Allen kept his place in Liverpool's starting line-up after making his first start of the season in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. His second start of the season was even less enjoyable. Joe won a penalty with what looked suspiciously like a dive – he's lucky the referee didn't see it that way as he was already on a yellow card.

Allen's former Swansea team-mate Ben Davies finally made his league debut for Spurs as a substitute, though he'd probably have stayed on the bench if their first-choice left back hadn't got himself injured.

    Leicester 1-1 Arsenal

Aaron Ramsey returned to Arsenal's starting line-up after missing the 1-0 Champions League victory over Besiktas due to suspension. He came close to adding to the four goals he's scored so far this season, but lately, Arsenal have struggled in matches where they don't get to win a trophy at the end. How times have changed.

    Andy King
played 90 minutes for Leicester. It's strange how a player who was mostly benched in the Championship is starting every match in the Premier League. But I'm not complaining.

    Championship

    Brighton 2-2 Charlton

Andrew Crofts played the first half for Brighton, which puts me in the difficult position of wondering whether I should hope he was substituted because he played badly or because he was injured.

Simon Church came on at half-time and set up Charlton's second goal – the forward is yet to start this season, but already has his first goal and assist, which is good going for Church. Rhoys Wiggins played 90 minutes; Morgan Fox was an 80th-minute substitute.

    Leeds 1-0 Bolton

Craig Davies returned to Bolton's starting line-up after being rested for the League Cup win over Crewe Alexandra. Davies made an excellent start to the season, but the goals dried up around the time his manager said he could be the team's main goal-getter this season. Steve Morison (calf) continues to miss out for Leeds.

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Reading

Chris Gunter's biggest contribution to this match has been interpreted both positively and negatively: he either did well to divert a Middlesbrough shot onto the post or he almost scored an own goal. You can make up your own minds on that one. Jake Taylor also played 90 minutes; Hal Robson-Kanu remains out with a knee injury.

    Millwall 2-1 Blackpool

Jermaine Easter was an unused substitute for Millwall after playing 90 minutes in the 2-0 League Cup defeat to Southampton. Millwall returned to winning ways after suffering two consecutive defeats – their first losses since March.

Eliot Parish was on the bench for Blackpool, who remain bottom and pointless, though only Nottingham Forest have beaten them by more than one goal.

    Watford 4-2 Huddersfield

Joel Lynch picked up his third yellow card in his last five matches for Huddersfield. All have so far been for fouls. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to stop ten-man Watford from taking all three points.

England under-21 international Jonathan Bond (who is and quite likely always will be eligible for Wales) was on the bench for Watford.

    Wigan 4-0 Birmingham

Emyr Huws played 90 minutes and set up Wigan's third goal against the club with whom he excelled on loan last season. At the time of this match, Huws was on loan from Manchester City, but his six-month loan was ended a couple of days later when Wigan decided to sign him permanently.

David Cotterill kept his place in Birmingham's starting line-up against his former club. Neal Eardley did not feature, having celebrated his midweek return to the first team by injuring his groin.

    Wolves 3-1 Blackburn

Adam Henley made his first league start of the season for Blackburn, but found himself on the losing side against Wolves, who are only out of the top four on goal difference.

Dave Edwards and Lee Evans kept their places in Wolves' starting line-up, but captain Sam Ricketts was on the bench. He is still awaiting his first league appearance of the season, but he has scored in every appearance he has made so far (which admittedly is only one appearance, but that's not bad for a defender).

    League One

    Colchester 1-3 Peterborough

Sanchez Watt made his first appearance of the season as a 58th-minute substitute for Colchester after recovering from patella tendonitis. Arsenal believe this will be the season where Watt begins climbing up the leagues. Climbing up League One would be a very good start: Colchester are 23rd with one point.

    Doncaster 0-2 Oldham

James Wilson played 90 minutes for Oldham, helping them to their first win and first clean sheet of the season. There the good news ends. Doncaster haven't won at home for seven games, and Oldham only managed to hold on to their goalscorer for another 24 hours. It could be another season of struggle for Oldham.

    Fleetwood 1-1 Leyton Orient

Chris Maxwell played 90 minutes for Fleetwood, who drop to second place but remain unbeaten following their draw with Orient. Perhaps someone could explain why Maxwell not in the Wales squad as he looks to me like the only Welsh goalkeeper above League Two playing regular first-team football. Not forgetting that he has three clean sheets from his first six games.

Lloyd James played 90 minutes for Leyton Orient. Orient are unbeaten in their last four games, but already trail the league leaders by six points.

    Gillingham 2-0 Crewe

George Ray received five stitches under his right eye in the 3-2 defeat (after extra time) to Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup, but the club's medical staff deemed fit to start the game, and the manager deemed him fit to complete the 90 minutes. Billy Waters, who has been complimented on a 'bright' start despite the general team performance, also started for Crewe. Callum Saunders was a 71st-minute substitute.

Josh Pritchard was named in Gillingham's squad after recovering from a groin injury, and made a stoppage-time appearance. Aaron Morris was left on the bench.

    MK Dons 2-0 Crawley

Joe Walsh and Gwion Edwards started for Crawley, who have lost their way of late after a strong start to the season, but at least they proved they're twice as good as Manchester United. Crawley should have equalised when they were awarded a penalty following an incident that saw MK Dons go down to ten men - but the penalty was saved, and MK Dons scored a late second to consign Crawley to a third consecutive league defeat.

    Port Vale 1-2 Chesterfield

Richard Duffy returned to Port Vale's starting line-up after being rested for the 3-2 defeat to Cardiff City in the League Cup. The score I in this match was 1-1 at the break, but Chesterfield scored 20 seconds after the restart, which must have completely ruined the effect of even the most inspiring half-time team talk. With just one win from their opening five matches, it's been a disappointing start for Port Vale.

    Preston 1-1 Sheff Utd

Ben Davies started for Sheffield United as they visited the home of one of the teams considered to be their promotion rivals, though Sheff Utd's disappointing start to the season means they're in mid-table for now. Davies came close to his second goal of the season (or third, if you include a shoot-out goal): his effort had to be 'expertly tipped over' the bar. It was one of many chances for both sides, but the two excellent goalkeepers restricted them to one goal each.

    Scunthorpe 2-1 Walsall

Tom Bradshaw was denied a goal for Walsall early on, but was there to take advantage of a defensive mix-up to head the ball into the bottom right corner on 70 minutes. This was Bradshaw's third goal in seven starts, but Walsall are still without a win this season – just as Scunthorpe were until Walsall helped them out.

    Swindon 1-1 Coventry

Aaron Phillips made his first appearance of the season for Coventry, starting in place of the unwell Jordan Clarke. This was Coventry's third draw in a row, though they are unbeaten in four and have been facing some of the bigger clubs in League One.

Louis Thompson played 90 minutes for Swindon – his last match as an official Swindon player rather than a Norwich City loanee - while his brother Nathan Thompson served a one-match suspension.

    Yeovil 1-1 Barnsley

Lewin Nyatanga played 90 minutes for Barnsley, who are now unbeaten in four. A point was probably the least they expected from this match, given that Yeovil hadn't won at home since March. They even needed a Barnsley player to score their equaliser for them.

    Notts County 1-2 Bristol City

Dave Richards and Wes Burns were unused substitutes for Bristol City as they returned to winning ways – not that Bristol City have actually lost in the league this season. They're outside the top two only on goal difference, though they're also just eight points from the relegation zone, so let's not get too excited.

Jake Cassidy played 90 minutes for Notts County, who probably thought they'd got a point until they thoughtlessly conceded a stoppage-time penalty.

    League Two

    Bury 2-1 Accrington

Back and groin injuries have restricted Craig Jones to just one start for Bury this season, but he made his comeback as a 68th-minute substitute. Nicky Adams started for Bury, who were forced to play for twenty minutes with ten men, but they held on to take the points against winless Accrington. Bury had been hoping to sign Accrington's goalscorer, a move which did not go ahead, but they kindly gave Accrington one of their own players the following day.

    Cambridge 5-0 Carlisle

Dan Hanford was on the bench for Carlisle, who remained outside the bottom two despite the heavy defeat. Perhaps Carlisle might like to consider giving their substitute goalkeeper a chance. He did well enough for Hereford United for many fans to be shocked by his release.

Johnny Hunt did not take his usual place on Cambridge's bench as they were busy trying to send him back to Wrexham.

    Cheltenham 1-0 Hartlepool

Troy Brown got his first assist of the season as Cheltenham's unbeaten start continued. It looked as though Hartlepool might build on the three points they'd gained so far this season, but the 90th-minute winner meant Cheltenham were up to second, while all Hartlepool can say is that they're the lowest-ranked Football League team to have won a match.

    Mansfield 1-2 Burton

Lee Beevers was unable to take advantage of a 'golden' chance to take the lead, sending his shot over the bar. He was left to regret it as Mansfield lost at home to unbeaten table-toppers Burton. Burton went down to ten men in the 86th minute, and held on through fourteen minutes of stoppage time.

    Northampton 1-0 Exeter

Arron Davies kept his place in Exeter's starting line-up, but if he was hoping to prove a point to his previous club, he was probably disappointed. Exeter have just two points from their five matches this season.

Kaid Mohamed played 90 minutes for Northampton, who have started strongly this season. Daniel Alfei was expected to return from injury, but didn't.

    Oxford 3-3 Dag & Red

Jon Meades was an unused substitute for Oxford, who finally picked up their first point of the season, also quadrupling their tally of league goals. They took the lead twice in this match, but Dag & Red were not to be beaten.

Dag & Red are still without Christian Doidge, who got a little bit overexcited about making his debut a fortnight ago and injured himself warming up.

    Portsmouth 0-1 Newport

Andrew Hughes and Darren Jones started and as Newport claimed their first win – and first clean sheet - of the season. The win was sealed in the 86th minute when a free kick eluded all the Newport players and went into the goal. Good thing it wasn't an indirect free kick, really. Mike Flynn returned from a hamstring injury, but was an unused substitute for Newport.

    Shrewsbury 2-1 Luton

Jake Howells played 90 minutes for Luton, but Alex Lawless is still waiting for his first appearance of the season due to a hamstring injury. Shrewsbury are unbeaten this season and recently knocked Leicester City out of the League Cup. Unfortunately, they released most of their Welsh players last season.

    Tranmere 2-1 Morecambe

Owain Fôn Williams and Eliot Richards played 90 minutes for Tranmere as they ended Morecambe's 100% start to the season. Morecambe took the lead in the first half, but Tranmere struck back not long after half-time, finally getting the winner on 90 minutes. Morecambe did play nearly half an hour with ten men, but judging from Watford, MK Dons, Bury and Burton's victories, that is no excuse. Jason Koumas missed out for Tranmere due to a knee injury.

    York 0-0 Wycombe

Joe Jacobson played 90 minutes and helped Wycombe to keep a clean sheet as they stayed in touch with the early pace-setters. Aaron Amadi-Holloway made his third appearance for Wycombe: all have come from the bench. While a draw might have been disappointing for Wycombe, it can hardly have come as a great surprise. Draws are the only kind of result York have been able to get in the league this season.

Danny Parslow was an unused substitute for York.

    Scottish Premiership

    Aberdeen 2-0 Partick Thistle

Ash Taylor returned to Aberdeen's starting line-up after taking a week off for unknown reasons. He was criticised by fans for making major defensive errors in last his two matches, but the clean sheet suggests he did better this time.

    Inverness 2-0 Kilmarnock

Marley Watkins made his third consecutive start for Inverness, who are top of the table, unbeaten in five matches, and haven't conceded a single goal in the league.

    Dundee 1-1 Celtic

Adam Matthews made his first start for Celtic since returning from a calf muscle injury. He lasted just 45 minutes before injuring himself again.

Dundee (and now Wales) goalkeeper Kyle Letheren needed to make a 'breathtaking' save to stop Celtic from grabbing the win. Dundee are unbeaten in all competitions this season.

    La Liga

    Real Sociedad 4-2 Real Madrid

Gareth Bale doubled Real Madrid's lead on 11 minutes after nutmegging an opponent, but their defence was probably at its strongest when on the attack: their opening goal was scored by Sergio Ramos.
