FAW: Statment - Raymond Verheijen
Friday 24th February 2012

FAWFAW STATEMENT
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) wishes to announce that it has today received the resignation of Raymond Verheijen.

Raymond was the assistant manager to Gary Speed with the Wales national team.

The FAW accepts the resignation with regret, as Raymond was due to assist the Wales squad this week with the match against Costa Rica, a game being staged in honour of the Wales manager who tragically left us in November of last year.

In light of the forthcoming match, and the sensitivities of it, the FAW has no further comment to make at this time.

The FAW would like to take the opportunity to thank Raymond for his work over the last twelve months and wishes him well for the future.

FAW: Assistant manager Kit Symons
Friday 24th February 2012

FAWFAW CONFIRM KIT
The FAW has confirmed that former international Kit Symons will become the assistant manager to Chris Coleman.

Kit is currently working with Fulham.

The Club can confirm that Fulham FC Academy Manager, Kit Symons, will be joining the backroom staff of the Wales national team on a part-time basis. Symons’ role with Wales will not impact upon his duties at Fulham FC.

Kit will not be officially involved with the team for the Gary Speed Memorial match against Costa Rica, and will link up with Wales’ for their friendly against Mexico in May.

“The Club has been fantastic and given me their blessing to go,” Symons told fulhamfc.com. “It was very important to me that the Chairman and Chief Executive, Alistair Mackintosh, were happy with the situation. It’s a tremendous opportunity for me and one that I can’t wait to take on and I’m delighted that I can continue my role at Fulham.”

FAW: Stars come out for Speed
Sunday 19th February 2012

Gary Speed: photo linked from bbc.co.uk

THE STARS COME OUT FOR GARY.

Wednesday 29th February 2012 will be a very special night at the Cardiff City Stadium as the whole of Wales will pay tribute to the memory of one of its most famous sons: Gary Speed MBE.

Former Wales international footballer and manager Gary left us in tragic circumstances last November. The match with Costa Rica will be part of a larger tribute to a man who was part of Welsh Football for more than twenty years and was guiding his young team to greater things.

However, the football match is only part of the celebrations. The Football Association of Wales is delighted to be able to announce a star-studded line-up of Welsh musical talent who will be performing before the game and at half time.

All areas of Welsh music are coming-together for the occasion.

From the world of rock and pop, needing no introduction, we welcome ‘Super Furry Animals’.

Mike Peters, formerly of ‘The Alarm’, now with ‘Big Country’, will be playing a set.

The incomparable Bryn Terfel will be singing, accompanied by the Risca Male Voice Choir.

Former Miss Wales, Courtenay Hamilton, will once again sing the anthem.

‘Only Men Aloud’ will be featured before the match and at half time, performing in their unique style that has won them a legion of fans.

The footballing greats of Wales have not been forgotten either. Invitations have been sent to some eighty former internationals that played alongside Gary during his career and many of them will be at the ground to pay their tribute at half time. Former clubs of Gary’s are also sending representatives, plus some of his former club team-mates and managers will be in attendance, including Alan Shearer and Howard Wilkinson. All of Gary’s family will be present.

Fans are urged to be at the stadium from 6.15pm onwards as the entertainment will start straight away with presentations on the big screen. The live entertainment will start towards 7pm. Full refreshments will be available at the concourse bars and snack bars, so why not get-in early, enjoy a drink and listen to the top-line artists who will be helping to make it a special night for all concerned.

Tickets can be purchased from Cardiff City FC. Tel: 0845 345 1400.

Prices are: £10 adults, £5 juniors and senior citizens.

FAW: Coleman new Manager
Thursday 19th January 2012

ChrisCOLEMAN IN CHARGE
Chris Coleman has been confirmed as new Wales manager.

"Whilst on one hand it's probably the proudest moment of my career to be given the opportunity to lead my country, but then to be given that opportunity because of the circumstances nobody could foresee, so it's bittersweet for me, of course it is, I was very close friends with Gary, 30 years, so it's a difficult experience for me. It's probably the most difficult press conference I've ever done or ever had to do I imagine. But I'm very proud to be the new manager and I'm also very sad because of the situation we find ourselves in." - Chris Coleman.

“This has been a very difficult process .We have explored every avenue, every scenario possible. We have taken on board the thoughts and views of the backroom staff, the players and the supporters."

"All along we believe that we have been respectful and dignified and had no wish to be involved in a public debate on the appointment of Gary’s successor."
"Gary was the manager of Welsh football and of course we want to continue his legacy. He was not a figurehead, he was the manager and that is why we have decided on the appointment of Chris Coleman to build on the excellent foundations put in place by Gary”. - FAW Chief Executive Jonathan Ford.

NEWS ITEMS:
- Chris Coleman "understands" Aaron Ramsey's concerns.
-
Mark Hughes backs Chris Coleman to succeed as new Wales manager.
-
Chris Coleman yet to decide on backroom team.

The Football Association of Wales will be holding a press conference at the St Davids Hotel in Cardiff Bay. The conference will take place on Thursday, January 19th,2012 at 12 noon.

FAW: Carling Nations Cup news
Monday 19th December 2011

FAWThe Football Association of Ireland, the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Wales today responded to media claims about the Carling Nations Cup.

The tournament was established by the FAI, IFA, FAW and SFA in 2010 with costs and revenues to be shared and the Scottish FA getting a minimum fee requested for participation.
The competition took place in Dublin in February and May this year and returned a profit derived from television rights, sponsorship and ticket sales.

Following the tournament the FAI, the IFA and the FAW have been in negotiations with the Scottish FA seeking a downward adjustment of their fee to give a more equitable share of the profits to each of the competing associations based on the economic climate and ticket sales generated at the tournament.

It is disappointing that this matter has come into the public arena while the four associations are still trying to reach agreement. The FAI, IFA and FAW will not be making any further comment to give proper space for those discussions to take place.

FAW: The Voice
Monday 12th December 2011

THE VOICE
The third edition of the FAW's magazine 'The Voice' is now available.

It is available from various outlets around Wales and also as a digital book on the FAW website.

It was due to go to print just as we received the tragic news of Gary Speed's death - therefore it was not possible to fully rewrite the edition - so we took the decision to pay an initial tribute to him at the start of the magazine and left most of the rest of the issue as was.

In the next edition we will look further at the legacy left by Gary and include many more tributes to him. This should be available in February / March 2012.

In this issue we look at:
Recent Matches & Reviews.
A tribute to former Chief Executive, Alun Evans.
The season so far for the youngsters and the ladies.
Bangor City's New Stadium.
A tale from the vaults of Welsh Football History.
Interviews with Aaron Ramsey and Jayne Ludlow.
Craig Bellamy's 'Club 39'.

Plus all the news from the FAW team as they get 'out and about'.

FAW: Alun Evans (1942-2011)
Sunday 13th November 2011

The FAW was sad to announce yesterday the passing of former secretary, Alun Evans.

Porth-born Alun had been in poor health for some time and passed-away last night (Saturday 12th November) He succeeded Trevor Morris as secretary of the association in 1982 and continued until 1995 when he left the association and was succeeded by David Collins.
He also sat on many UEFA and FIFA regulatory bodies. Later he returned as the LoW representative on the FAW Council.
For many years he was also involved with the Universities Athletics Union and was the secretary of Welsh League side UWIC.

A forthright individual, Alun was instrumental in the formation of the League of Wales and was a strong leader of the FAW policies.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time
