The Wales U-17s lost 1-0 to the Ukraine at Bridge Meadow, Haverfordwest this evening.

In a hard fought match, the visitors kept possession of the ball for long periods and took the lead from a well taken free kick after 22 minutes.

The young Welsh side showed plenty of endeavour but could not find a way through the Ukrainian defence. Impressive performance's for Wales from Jamie Price and Grant Beasy.

Manager Ian Rush will be hoping for better things from the second encounter. The side’s meet again on Thursday (23.09) at Stebonheath Park, Llanelli kick off 11am.

The U-17s lost 2-1 against Greece in Group 4 and failed to qualify for the finals in France.

The first half was dominated by Greece, but Wales slowly came into the game and took the lead after 22 minutes when Scott Thyer bundled the ball home.

With half time fast approaching it looked liked Ian Rush’ side would go in 1-0 up, but on 39 minutes Wales conceded a penalty after a hand ball by Kyle Critchell, Syridon converted the spot kick to make it 1-1.

The second half was pretty even until the 73rd minute, the ball was crossed into the Wales area from the left. Bernidakis was on hand to slotthe ball home from 12 yards giving the Greeks the lead.

With only a minute left, Wales pushed on for an equaliser and nearly got it when a Jamal Easter shot hit the bar, the ball then bouncing out to Scott Thyer, he then saw his effort hit the post.

Greece won 2-1, which gave Portugal the place in the Final Tournament. All in all a very disappointing end to a great campaign over six matches, which showed 4 wins, a draw and one defeat.

In today's other game Portugal beat Israel 3-0.

Wales line up:
Wayne Hennessey, Rhys Powell, Lewin Nyatanga, Kyle Critchley, Michael Johnston, Robert Davies, Mitchell Booth, Jamal Easter, Scott Thyer, Joe Ledley, Jamie Price

Subs:- Adam Davies, Phil Gray, Liam Jones, Shaun Eardley, Chad Bond, Owain Fon Williams

Scores - Wales (Scott Thyer, 24 mins) - Greece (Spyridon, 39 mins penalty, Bernidakis, 73 mins)

Wales will meet Greece kick off 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon in Sexial, near Setubal in Portugal. A point from the game would be enough to take the top spot in the group, and see Wales qualify for the finals in France.

The squad is bolstered by the return of Rhys Powell, Kyle Crichtell and Robert Davies who were all suspended for the match with Portugal. One player does miss-out tomorrow, Kyle Morris is suspended after picking-up a second yellow card.

The U-17 side won their second successive match in Group 4 as they defeated hosts and reigning U-17 champions Portugal by 1-0.

Wales were without three key players who were suspended for this match, In total, four players made their first start in this stage of the tournament, with Monday’s match winner Jamal Easter starting the game on the bench.

Half time Wales..0 Portugal.0

In the second half Wales pressed strongly and deservedly took the lead after
65 minutes. A through ball from substitute Jamal Easter found Phil Gray on the right, his cross in to the area was knocked back by Scott Thyer into the path of Mitchell Booth, he then hooked the ball the home to give Wales the lead. For the last 15 minutes Wales were put under extreme pressure, but the boys held out to record a famous victory.

In today's other game Greece defeated Israel 2-1, meaning Wales now need just one point from the final match to go through to the finals finals in France at the end of May.

Wales line up :- Wayne Hennessey, Lewin Nyatanga, Michael Johnston, Kyle Morris, Mitchell Booth, Scott Thyer (capt), Joe Ledley, Adam Davies, Phil Gray, Liam Jones, Jamie Price.
